2013 - Eastern TAT - Old Dawgs, New Tricks

Thanks to advrider.com, two old dawgs and I are headed to the TAT within the next 15 days. We will be utilizing Sam’s GPS tracks to route our way through TN, MS, and AR. At which point, we’ll turn around and super slab it back to Tellico.

We’re not all old – but we all ride Harleys together for fun and travel. Two of the three of us have some experience on dirt bikes. I’m not the old one and I also don’t have experience on the dirt bikes – which makes me believe I’ll have more “experiences” with the dirt.

The other two riders are around 20 years older than I am and I’m no spring chicken. I’m, “Young Bull” (as they call me) and I’m 38. The other two inmates on this journey to escape are “Luigi” and “Woody 5 Star”.

The bikes:
1. 2013 KTM 990 Adventure – “Luigi”
2. 2011 BMW 1200GS – “Woody 5 Star”
3. 2011 Kawasaki KLR 650 – Mine (Young Bull)

I don’t have pics of all the bikes, just the KTM and my KLR. See Below.

So in this case, I’m thinking “young bull” is the smart one. But we’ll see who runs and who walks down the hill to get some tail or all the tail…
(and that is Luigi - can you see why his name is Luigi??)

Yeah, quickie. This is really a test run. Next year will be the Full Monty.

Despite the short trip, we are all still pretty excited. Luigi said it best, "I just don't know what to expect. That is why I want to do this!"

I agree, on the harleys, we have a good time, but we have ridden so many great roads and camped and partied...but, there aren't really any surprises left.

I can't wait. The gear is ready, the GPS are loaded, the bikes are ready. Let's ride!

Of course, I have to wait. I also know when this trip is done, we will all wish we could keep going. But that is next year, because the old dawgs need to learn some new tricks to survive on the TAT!

Continued preparations..

1. Spot allocated and activated.
2. Inventoried the trunk. (inventory below - I wouldn't mind some feedback on it)
3. This has been done a while, but here are some high level objectives by day. Our time table is flexible...so if we don't hit the expectation, it isn't a big deal.

DayRide GoalsWeekdayMileage
Tampa->TellicoFriday600
Day 1TN1,2,3,4Saturday257
Day 2TN5,6, (1/2)MS1Sunday211
Day 3(1/2)MS1,2,3Monday227
Day 4AR1Tuesday220
Day 5AR2,AR3,AR4Wednesday212

i40Tellico Friday375
Tellico->TampaSaturday600

The Inventory:
Figured I would do a quick inventory of the rear box. I am probably packing too much - but again, this is our "figure it out" ride. Without this ride and no past experience doing these types of trips...we don't know if we're packing too much or too little.

Rear Box Contents

1. 10w-40
2. Freshly oiled air filter
3. chain lube (dry)
4. air filter oil and rim grease
5. front and rear inner tubes
6. extra gear shifter (this is probably not coming with me)
7. JB Weld (fixes all kinds of things to include metal)
8. Jumper Cables
9. Filter Cleaner
10. Chain cleaner
11. Chain Brush
12. Bead Breaker
13. 16 tooth sprocket (spare) (may not be coming with me)
14. Air compressor and patches/glue etc
15. Zip ties
16. .40 Ammo
17. Fuses and other minor electrical stuff
18. Duct Tape
19. Extra spark plug
20. Tire Pressure Gauge
21. Valve Stem Puller
22. Tire Spoons and other various tools for the bike

Final maintenance before the trip is tomorrow...number of things on the list that will occur. But I'm most excited about putting some new tires!

Have fun!

Good luck guys. We have a group of 3 that are going to do the same in September. We also are "practicing" for a full TAT trip sometime in the future. We will be following your adventure. Enjoy and be safe!

The tires I have (had of this morning) are shinko or something like that (50/50's). Not bad at all. I took them on some sandy Florida trails and they performed decently for 50/50's.

For the most part, the bike is packed. Technology and the associated cables/wires/chargers are really all that remain. I've weighed each bag and the trunk. All-in-all, I feel I have too much weight.

Left Side Bag = 10 lbs (camp gear, 1 Gallon of fuel / rotopax) = 17.5 lbs
Right Side Bag = 16 lbs (clothes, klim pants/jacket)
Top Duffel = 11 lbs (laptop, bed roll, sleeping bag, tent poles, flip flops)
Rear Trunk = 28 lbs (tools, tubes, maintenance items, first aid, and ratchet straps - just to trailer to Tellico and back)

Once we're in Tellico, this will change - some of the weight in the trunk will be redistributed and some of it isn't going with us. Goal for the trunk is around 20 lbs.

I also cleaned the original air filter, lubed the bike, and we now have new tires/tubes! We are ready to roll!

Question: Where in Tellico do you suggest we leave our Truck / Trailer?

(we're trailering three bikes from Tampa to Tellico)

Thanks,
J

A week away from the drive up to Tellico. I've been traveling for work non-stop for the last three weeks. Only time I've had to work on the bike is the weekend...but I'm ready. Luigi sends me an email today (as i'm flying back from Houston) asking me for some assistance on Sunday at his place. He's looking for a review of his pack list.

I foresee Luigi being high maintenance!!

Subscribed... can't wait to see how you guys do on the bigger bikes. I'm thinking of doing it next year and am not sure what bike to take.

I'm looking forward to it as well! We'll have two gopro's running and we're equipping the third guy with gopro attachment base so we can move them around and get different views.
