60CS won't route like I want it

I know you guys are getting tired of GPS questions, but this one atleast has to do with the way it works or the way it doesn't. When routing, my gps wants to send me way out of the way to get onto a hwy even though I have it set to avoid hwys, toll roads, and even u-turns. After comparing it to beefjerky's gps which happens to be the same, we found that our settings are the same but mine will still send me way off course. We could stop at a store and tell it to go to sparta tennessee and they wouldn't match up. Could this be a software thing?

Could be bugs or your missing something subtle in how you specify your routing preferences or waypoints. One thing I've noted is that you can get some very weird results unless you have maps loaded that cover the entire route. If there's a gap and it has to drop to the basemap, all bets are off.

Under the setup menu for routing, you should check to see if you've set it for fastest or shortest distance. I've found that the unit always seeks out highways for fastest, even if those highways seem out of the way. I usually find that the GPS war correct even if I think I know better.

Are you using Metroguide or City Select? Garmin says the Metroguide will not autoroute, but it actually does, just not very well. You need City Select to route properly.

Yes I am using the shortest route, like I said in the other post, beefjerky and I have both gps units set exactly the same, all the options, but yet mine goes ape shit. I do have metro guide, so the software might be different.

That's odd. Usually shortest gets a bunch of neighborhoods and short roads here and there, while fastest in my unit usually finds the nearest highway and directs me to it.

why would you avoid highways if you want to get on highways?

, and even u-turns.

allow u-turns,it will save a lot of routing troubles.

beefjerky's gps which happens to be the same, we found that our settings are the same but mine will still send me way off course.

differences can be subtle.do you have the exact same mapsets and everything?

do you practice in the simulator mode?i can not get this across to anyone, not even the other salesmen in my store.i reiterate to all new users.we offer free lessons to our customers,i can tell most never practice.

anyway, set up the simulator and challenge the routing and then change the parameters and try again.

Just back from Prudhoe Bay, IMO it was really worth the trip, AK is a beautiful place & you need lots of time to take it all in. I'm looking forward to returning & exploring some places i didn't have time to ride.RIP Ron Melton

If your buddy doesn't have the same maps, then you're unlikely to get the same routes. Technically, Metroguide is not recommended for the 60CS - City Select is. The Garmin docs indicate that Metroguide will only autoroute on the PC, not on the GPS, although I recall some forum threads from a while back where people said it would work under some circumstances.

I don't want to get on the hwy. I do enough of that during the week. Beefjerkys unit would send us through neighborhoods and all of that when set on shortest distance, whereas mine would send you to a hwy regardless of which setting it was on. I think that it has to do with the software, because it will route on the pc but not in the gps itself, well atleast not how I want it to. I appreciate your help guys, I will practice with it and see. Where is the simulator mode function?

I suspect it can't auto-route on Metroguide so it's auto-routing on the base map which only has the major highways. Routing on the PC and on the GPS are totally separate animals.
