heintooga round bottom road

Anyone know if it is open? I may be in Maggie Valley the next couple of days and would like to ride it if possible.

I read somewhere on nps.gov that Heintooga Roundbottom Rd, Balsam Mountain Rd, and Heintooga Ridge Rd are closed for all of 2013 due to budget cuts. Roundbottom/Straight Fork is supposedly open.

Thanks, Laura. I checked nps.gov and you are correct. Those roads are closed for 2013.

And it's a damn shame. It's an awesome road.

I just can't see ow it costs much money to keep it open.

Yeah, it sucks. "Sequestration" is the fancy word the gubmint likes to toss around this year for budget cutting. HRR is on my bucket list; I sure hope it reopens next year. I wish they'd just leave the gates open and let users clear off any deadfall. When the road gets rough, that's more fun for us! Meanwhile, I live in an area where unmarried, unemployed people drive around in their Escalades, talking on their iPhones and hatching babies every year. I will have to work until I keel over, and when I'm able to sneak off for a little relaxing ride in the hills, the choices of where to ride are steadily decreasing. It's enough to make one's blood boil. Sorry if this post gets punted to the basement ...
