Nice trip report and pictures. Roger & I are in contact with Big Dog we hope to use most of their trip tracks for our trip to AK next July. We will be riding Drz400s. I'm getting the M/C ready and accessories we need. Reading AK road trips so I can get all the Intel I need. U probably mentioned it but what time of year did U go?

The last two summers I've ridden a big bmw gs to Alaska and have had bike problems both trips. Now you've got me thinking I should ride my wr250r next June to Alaska. I think I'll try re-gearing it first (2more teeth on the rear) to see if I can make that sixth gear more useful in the mountains. I've done interstate trips already on her but the against the wind and up hills can be a forth gear climb. Thanks for the ride report

Great RR! I really enjoyed it. I would like to do Alaska sometime, maybe '15 or '16. I've got a DRZ, and I'm looking for a 950/990. I'd probably decide on which one to take by what routes I wanted to go. The biggest issue for me would be getting to the start of the trip on a DRZ, it's almost an additional 2k miles, one way.

If you make it down to AZ for a ride, let me know!

I rode up to Anchorage and back in 03 from Nor Cal on an R1150R,headed home the 1st of Sept which was like the first day of winter in Alaska it turned out.
Bridges had ice, hard rain and snow was creeping down the mountains.
We had a great ride, put 7500 miles on the bikes, rode in mostly driving rain from Anchorage to Weed CA,7 days of sweet rain riding.

Late July was summer that year in Palmer,2 weeks of 80 degree temps that we only missed by a week or so. Very memorable ride and I would take my DR650 next time, maybe throw it on the ferry in Bellingham on the way up this time. The Alaska hiway has many stretches where a 110mph cruise seems slow and visibility in all directions is a long, long ways.

We both had Seat Concepts seats. Not sure how I would have done 300 miles a day on the stocker.
