Anyone been through Albania?
I'm heading that way in September and have most of the general information I need. Was wondering whether anyone has specific information about places to stay in towns and beachs, camping and/or cheap hotels.
Thanks, Mike |

Ask same question here, searching first would be a good idea though:

Yes...in June, heading towards Turkey
Entered from Podgorica. The road towards Albania was not marked at all. Mapsource Worldmap was helpful but not 100% accurate. The road wanders off into a huge forrest of short scrub-pine trees. I had a waypoint for the border but wasn't sure how accurate it was. Keeping an eye on the GPS, I saw that I was making progress towards that point. It got pretty spooky. Would hate to have been there after 20:00. I finally arrived at the border crossing. It was the longest of the trip but only took 1 hour.
I read plenty of warnings about the area between the border and Shkoder so I didn't stop for anything. Tirana was also a bitch to navigate through. Fortunately there are cops at every corner and they were very helpful. I did get bumped around in traffic in the city. I was absolutely amazed at hoe beautiful the girls were there. Then I realized I was riding through the red-light district! Elbasen was also a traffic nightmare. Take the truck route CCW around the city. I made it to the Macedonian border on Lake Ohrid and stayed at a hotel/casino on the east side. PM me and I'll send a Garmin track. 'munkie |

Glad to hear there are folks out there considering Albania as a destination or waypoint on their two-wheeled travel. I worked there for two years and was lucky enough to get to travel throughout the country.
For motorcyclists seeking a taste of extreme adventure without having to go all the way to Africa, Eastern Russia, or the Andes, Albania offers plenty. If you take the time to get off the main roads (and I use that term loosely!) you may find yourself in villages never before visited by two-wheeled westerners. If your're interested in more details, drop me a line at sksintirana@hotmail.com Steve |
