I know, I know.... I have read your incredible article and well documented thread! Well done Sir!!
http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=827153

I own a 1986 R80G/S with the "points in the can."
Seems to work just fine

I want to (for the moment) replace this Hall Effect Sensor in my
1981 R80G/S and stay with that for the time being.....

These folks appear to sell a replacement for the Honeywell 2AV54 Hall effect sensor: BBHME56: Hall Effect Vane Sensor Replacement for 2AV54, 2AV16A, 2AV51A, 2AV56 and 2AV63

Good luck!

Here is another substitute for the Honeywell 2AV54 Hall effect sensor, the CHYME56 - which is sold in Germany for 10 euros: http://www.hallsensors.de/Hall-Vane.htm

I think Tom Wade (http://tomwade.me/motorcycles/techni.../hesprices.php) may be the best source for this sensor at the moment, unless someone wants to buy 100 or wrangle a group buy. Good luck!

I looked for one when mine died on my 85 G/S.

Ended up going this route and couldn't be happier. http://www.motoelekt.com/ignition.htm
