Swappable tanks onto an '83 R65 ?

What other BMW tanks will swap onto the '83 R65?

I'm looking at starting a cafe project bike and my co-worker is selling his R65. ...I just can't get over how ugly the tank is.

I dig some of the earlier and higher displacement tanks, but I believe I've heard the larger bike tanks mount differently.

any tank from a r80g/s, r80st, r100gs, r100r. they all mount with the metal hook thingy.
when I had my r65, I would use my gs PD tank on it for long trips, nice to have 8.5 gallons! it could be switched back and forth in seconds.

The BIG difference is the height of the cross bar on the front of the frame that the tank slides into.
All the bikes fish listed above have a lower mounting bar. (about 20mm)
When you try to slide a standard tank onto it it sits way high in the back end because of this.
I made an adapter for mine so I can use a monolever tank on an R65 frame that I modded for a monolever custom. I learned this the hard way AFTER powdercoating the frame. Dohhhh!

I had an R65 that I used to run a R80 g/sPD tank on. It made the bike look pregnant!

What tank is this, R60/5?, and would it work?

Also, would the R100RS tank work?

All the GS tanks look...well...pregnant.

Thats a /5 or /6 Sport Tank and it really looks nice on that later R100. The bike's owner didn't get the fit of the seat quite right but a little reworking and finessing would improve things substantially.

The /5 tanks are getting pretty pricey but I found a /6 version for $40 so keep your eyes open.

AFAIK, these tanks won't work on an R65 with out some mods to the mounts but thats no big deal but borrow a tank and try it out.

That's the small 18 liter tank offered from 1970-thru 1976.
(that one in particular is for a /6) it will not fit due to the front mount and more importantly, their is no clearance for the electrics underneath.
the first problem can be dealt with, but not the second.

r100 tank on an r65

Does anyone have a photo of the differences in how an r100 tank mounts on an r65 frame? I'm making the switch this weekend and am hoping to get some insight regarding what I'll need to fabricate before I start the project. Thanks!
