Yikes, does this mean it's just asphalt (60%) and gravel (40%) and no dirt?? I sure hope not...

We are ready to roll. The new course has been established. The weather forecast points to excellent riding weather. The Natural Chimneys campground is open and ready. The ladies clubs supplying our lunches are glad we are coming. The government shutdown forced us to create a "Plan B" route for the S500 that avoids forest roads, so we are using county roads. Despite all the problems you can bet the food, the scenery and camaraderie will be outstanding. Hope to see you all at the S500! Washington Area Trail Riders - WATR

I've ridden it more times than I can remember and while I don't know the splits for sure, I would say it was usually about 60% dirt, 30% gravel, and 10% pavement.

The collateral damage from the shut down stinks... what a shame.

Im guessing the USFS did not open the seasonal gates on 10/1 like they should have - like Hall Spring etc. Utilizing the forest when it is in limbo might compromise WATR's permit - hence the reroute to VDOT roads.

I have a big truck camping trip coming up in 2 weeks to a remote ridge line in Shenandoah County that is only 4x4 accessible from 10/1 - 12/31. I may have to change my plans as well....

WTF Congress...

Well hell. If we ride less, we drink more.

Glass is half full!

so can anyone confirm the split of dirt and asphalt? I see the 40% gravel, but what is the other 60%?

I Dont think its going to be bad.

I've been riding around the area the last few days. Only saw 2 roads that we normly ride closed. One is a gravel road used to connect some of the better forest roads. Bridge was out so there are going to be a few route changes. We should be doing most of the normal route. Other than dry and dusty it should be a good weekend.
