Between Rivers.

It was about 50 kilometers between the Peel River and the Mackenzie river, the largest and longest river system in Canada.

Separated by a fork in the river to the east, lies the village of Tsiigehtchic.

This is probably my favorite Dempster Highway photo! Damn, I lucked out on the weather!

This is the MV Louis Cardinal. The captain was from Quebec, and was flown in to work three weeks on, three weeks off for the summer months. Real friendly guy, seemed to love his job! Apparently the Mackenzie river is as deep as 200 feet in places. There are a few months of the year when the road shuts down completely, due to breakup, and freeze over, when the ferry can't run. People end up flying to get anywhere for a while. I've found some very interesting photos and videos documenting the transition between the ferry in the summer, and the prepping of the ice crossing around November. It starts with people walking out on the ice and hand shoveling the snow, until it is thick enough for smaller trucks with plows, then the bigger trucks.

On the way north, the ferry stopped there before landing on the north shore of the river, back on the Dempster. I really wish I explored it up close, I did have the option, and the ferry was free..

Arrival

Another 130 kms of fast gravel on some of the flattest, straightest roads I have ever been on! By this point, the sun had been in my eyes for hours, and seemed to just circle me all day long. I took a rest at the nearest suitable looking pond of water, and found one with a creek flowing into it. Feeling hot, and dehydrated, I had a swim to cool off, then filtered and drank some tanin stained, but tasteless water. I tried to close my eyes for a bit. I was at the point where I had to take breaks like these in order to continue on. I arrived in Inuvik about 11:00PM tired, hungry and filthy! The sun is still a fist widths in the air. The bugs were out in full force.

I finally made it!! 3700 kms down, 3700 to go.

Is that light on your helmet coming from the sun or from inside after that great achievement. Well done

Thumb Great Trip report!

T of C, Kick ass ride report, really enjoyed the photos and observations. This is a trip I also want to do, though I haven't quite figured out how to get the time I would need, (live in southern Maine)... Adding in a couple cross continent jaunts, I'd probably need around two months to do it justice. I'll get there though, and reports like this keep the desire burning. Thanks, John
