FWIW, not far beyond that sign is the Abol Stream campground. I've been there many times on the GS, its as far as I'd suggest anyone go on a public forum. The area you bumped into south of the NMW is called Ki Jo-Mary, and is also off-limits.
The Jo-Mary road was the one I flipped the gate-keeper off .
Guess they prefer gas-sucking SUV's instead of us....

We hooked up with Kenny the next day, and he planned to do the Golden Road too... he skipped the whole area instead.

I understand.
By no means am I trying to take over your ride report, this is the view I had from my campsite when I went past the sign to Abol Stream:

It is, sometimes, worth it to be a little naughty.

How mooseterious is that?

(at least you can legally marry your cousin there)

Most of Maine is owned by timber and paper companies, they limit access on their roads. The areas known as North Maine Woods and Ki Jo-Mary are controlled by a group of owners, and they don't want motorcycles on their roads.

I knew about the issues, that's why we wanted to use you as a guide... but the bad weather screwed us up. Actually, it may was better this way anyway, but that's your story to tell... where's your ride-report?

Very much enjoying this report, and it reminds me how much respect I have for the motorcyclists of the northeast. It just seems like between the weather, laws, and family/job responsibilities you'd be lucky to get 5 or 6 weekends a year to ride, and yet people up there still buy bikes.

Re: the ducks. I not only thought of free dinner, but that you'd be doing a service by eating a couple. I've seen campsites made pretty much unusable by ducks and geese.

I feel your pain. A few years back, in a snit after being turned away at Baxter, a buddy & I drove past that sign & wound our way to within 5 miles of Greenville, before we encountered pavement again. It was "interesting", given that he was on one of the very first "new" Triumph triples from the '90s & I was riding my do-it-all adventure bike, the Concours C-10. Gravel was not a big design criteria for either one. Everything was actually fine... until the rain started. After that it got a little dicey. Especially treacherous were the wooden deck bridges with no guard rails. Years of logging trucks grinding sand & grit have polished the wood decking to a fine furniture smoothness. Once that gets good & wet, one is presented with the opportunity not just to crash, but to crash & then drown. I think we only saw 2 pickup trucks all afternoon, otherwise we were alone in the wilderness. Ken's Triumph failed to start after a smoke break somewhere in the middle of it & we spent a few moments contemplating riding the Connie 2-up the rest of the way & then trying to find the nearest Triumph dealer. maybe Boston (in those early days of Triumph's return) It turned out that "adventure" riding had just loosened the battery terminal.

Day 11: Maine - New Hampshire - Massachusetts
the last day...

it rained again overnight, but luckily it cleared up by the time we packed our wet tent for the last time.

took a last time effort moose tour by foot... nope, nada, nothing, nichts oh well.

made our way into New Hampshire

what are these man-made little islands in middle of the river? for utilities?

blah, blah, blah

Mt. Washington - so they say

Hwy 112

back at Librarians house - look what the cat dragged in from AVL: Kennyanc and PJ

all in all about 2600 miles: one broken blinker, a broken horn, a bunch of ductape, no moose, but good times.

spotwalla page

860 more miles to go in the truck...

return trip

the mc trip was way too short, but that was as much time as I could take off from work.

before we loaded up, I took an early morning stroll to the lake - you guessed right: still looking for moose

all loaded up and ready to go:

exciting drive

and since we started late (what else is new ) we decided to stop half way at a quaint little cabin in the woods: Thanks 6USMC6 and Muffinmonster for the great hospitality!

and you won't believe what happened on the way back: MOOSE!!!!!

a mother with babies

finally!

Probably remnants of a logging dam. There used to be chains anchored to the pilings, logs would be sent downriver to that dam, where they were sent on to a mill not far away.
