This was intended to provide an everyman's alternative to the GP style 250 and Formula 750 pro classes, but , the immediate populatity of one-liter four-strokes made them a major class for 1976.

Rules, structure, class definition in 1973.
Didn't BMW's R90S have a presence in the early superbike series?

always wanted one. Know where there is one in a barn, not used for 15 years. It has my cheque taped to it, for when the owner wants to sell!

A friend of mine has an SFC 1000 in his basement. Hasn't been ridden for many years.

The term superbike was first coined in the US in the very early 70's and was most often associated with four cylinder japanese bikes. In europe the term superbike became more common in the mid 80's and referred to to japanese four cylinders that were out performing traditional european two cylinder engines. I don't think there is an absolute first "superbike". Every generation has its own superbike. For me it was the Ducati TT2, which led the evolution to the TT1/F1 and then went on to become the 851. Purpose designed track bikes that were adapted to the road. The VFR is in there too... but it started later and ended sooner with the RC30. Don't think there is a right or absolute answer... lots of choices and fond memories though.
