Day 2 July 4th

So we head out of southern California across the golden gate bridge.

We are both really tired and want to take a shower. We head up the 101 and it starts to get hot. The heat is making me sleepy so we pull off at a gas station and regroup. We decide to cut over to the 1 to avoid the heat and start looking for a campsite.

The first campsite we hit is full because it is the 4th of July. After riding a bit more we find a campsite that is 25 bucks. We buy some much needed beer, take a shower, and set up camp.

We walk around the campsite then head to bed.

Miles for Day 1: 411
Miles for Day 2: 150

Day 3
We wake up and cook oatmeal. This is our usual breakfast for the mornings on the trip. Later we add in a nature valley bar and it keeps us full until lunch.

Head up the coast again to get to the redwood national park.

We stop and do the drive through tree. The line was at least an hour wait. We just went around the cars and went to the front of the line. Joys of a motorcycle.

Big trees.

Big Animals

We are camping most of the way and decide to stealth camp as much as possible. I believe this is a national forest we are in.

It is usually a swimming hole during the day. We passed a state campground that cost 35 bucks!!

Nice way to wind down the day with a Great White Beer from the Lost Coast Brewery!
Which campground was this? Great view of the coast!

Great ride report thus far. I am very glad to hear she is OK and willing to get back on a bike after a get off. That road side clutch replacement was awesome.

Keep it rolling!

Trees of Mystery in Klamath, CA just south of the Oregon border. Beautiful country up there...

Reminds me of a trip the wife and I took in '09...here's my wife helping out The Babe...

Enjoying your report! We are hoping to head up to Alaska next July.

Day 4

Today we leave California in the morning and head up to Crater Lake.

We are starving right when we get there and go to the deli they have an buy an overpriced sandwich to share. We go upstairs and find 2 chairs right in front of the window to eat at.

The lake is just soooooo blue!

We then make our way back to the 5 and head up north. We get off on an exit to find a camp site, pick up some beer, and proceed to get lost.

We managed to find some hills to hide in and run into a gun range. We talk to some people here and say anywhere up this path is a good place to camp.

So we take the path and find a nice place to camp.

This is when to realize that I forgot to budget alcohol into the trip planning stage.

Miles: 315 (plus another 50 looking for a campsite)

Day 5.

We get up and head back on the 5 freeway.

Going through Portland.

We had to make a choice: Go through the Olympic peninsula and take the ferry across, or stay on the 5 and go through Seattle. We chose the peninsula.

Beautiful clear day out.

Natalie pointing at our bike.

We talk to a couple on a harley on the ferry and find out that deception pass has a nice campground. We rode there and went for a little hike around the campground.

Deception pass in the background

We picked up some popcorn and we burned the crap out of it. Natalie isnt happy because she hiked around in her motorcycle boots while I had on my walking shoes.

We also did laundry, which was a disaster because it was still soaking wet in the morning.

Holy. Shit.

I've had my 1150GSA parked for about 4 months because I'm dreading replacing the dead transmission...and I have a motorcycle lift and a ridiculous tool selection in my garage.

Meanwhile you do the same job overnight in the parking lot of an auto parts store.

I'm not sure whether I'm feeling more admiration at your determination or pissed off at you for making me feel like a pansy.

Wow.
Normaly I would not bother to read any ride report about a trip on a big BMW, but replacing the clutch in a parking lot on that bike is impressive.
Natalie is even more impressive!
