oil loss 990

I hope this is not a repost I did look ......

Is it normal for the 990 to use oil ? I have just over 7000 miles and I seem to be adding oil often . If I am not alone that is fine Im just wondering if I should be contacting the dealer .........

Thanks in advance .

if that is the only 7000 miles so far, than it is normal, wait till it gets double of that and oil level will settle)))))

Yeah its a bit of a known issue. Not exactly like a jap 4 that never uses any oil. I found mine used far more oil in stop start city riding, but bugger all when riding hard out in the bush or on the road. Pays to take a quart / litre spare on a long trip or a weekender just in case. It will settle down with more miles.

What oil is everybody using?

As for my bike I'm going to give it a little more time to see if consumption decreases with higher mileage and then consider switching to 10w50 oil. I run 5w40 right now.

I'm running 10w50 like they call for .

I tried Dino oil very short term shifted like hell ! Engine temp came up . Mileage dropped .

I'm curious if there's any correlation to how some of our bikes have been broken in and the oil consumption issue.

Burning some oil has a lot to do with how the bike broke itself in. How tight or loose the rings seated. I assume you are running rotella t6 which burns a little in my bike too. Normally i run 15w60 out here in the desert with motul 300v but i was in a pinch and it needed changed bad so i through rotella back in it for my ride friday.

Consistant Oil Check

Be sure to check the oil AFTER you finish a ride, not before. Park it on the centerstand, in the same place, and check it right after you pull off your helmet. Overfilling will cause more oil use.

That said, these engines will go from high mark to low mark in 2-3000 miles. That's less than 1/2 qt which is not bad for big twins. High RPM pumps it out faster.

Oil level must be checked hot. See the owners manual. It is a dry sump, hence the need to check it hot when the oil tank is full. Checking cold will always read low or off the dip stick.
