last on the list

Just pulled the trigger on a garmin montana 650. GPS city is taking all of my milk money. (They actually give ADV'ers a nice treat) But, please allow me to follow the party places. I will be collecting all bottles/cans for recycling cash.

Not difficult to finish before dark as long as you start early and don't lollygag. The first time I did this ride, I took a bunch of pictures on Day 1 and got into Barstow after dark. Not fun.

The mornings have ranged from low 30's to mid 40's if I remember correctly.
Barstow seems to be chilly in the early morning, I recommend you layer up.

Have a well maintained bike, fresh tires, tire changing tools and a tube or two with your group, you'll be fine.

Edit: Don't wear blue jeans nor ride a stock KLR, either.

You know it! The 525 is a near perfect machine for this ride.

- 300 mile day - might wear us out a bit for the real ride
- You all who know DV, should we even attempt this on 690's, as part of a 300 mile day. If we were just day tripping, sure, no problem, but...
Option 3. Truck the bikes to Palmdale ... still looking for a volunteer to get our truck back to Vegas.

Option 2 sounds like the most fun, but don't want to have too much fun before the actual ride and then not enjoy it!

What do you all think? Anyone else interested in coming across through DV?

Wade
I was at Goler Wash about a month ago. There was a BAD storm in July that did severe damage to the whole DV area, including damaging paved roads. Goler is not recommended for Adventure Bikes right now. Shoot, I turned around and didn't even ride through it and I was on a plated CRF230F! I fell over on the first bad step-up. I heard there are many more bad step-ups through it. I was going west to east.

I would not ride 300 miles the day before I rode 200 miles through the dirt and then another 250 miles the next day. I've ridden LA-B-to-V six times, so I say this with experience.

Have you ridden LA-B-to-V before? The miles of sand is tough on Adventure Bikes and 450 miles over two days is a loooong way. Why make it longer by extending the mileage BEFORE the ride? Take the pavement before the ride to expend the least amount of energy.

I'm sure something will come through and you'll find someone to drive your vehicle.

I did this ride in '10 & '11 coming from PA. The mileage was the most offroad I ever did, not all that difficult, just long. Never rode sand before, but learned real quick.

First year I did it w/brother who lives in CA, he on a KLR. 1st day used up alot of time, then we got separated somehow & I really wanted to see the Husky Monument, so I did that solo & finished with about 1hr of riding in the dark. Next day no problem finishing in daylight.

Cold? In '10 leaving Barstow it was chilly! Low 20's. My Camelback straw was frozen till like 9am. The hotel courtyard fountain was frozen, (somebody's got a pic on here somewhere)

In '11 brother wasn't into it, so I rode solo both days. No problems either days.

I'm used to riding in PA coal country, so I really enjoyed the different terrain out west. I would think if you do a decent amount of offroad you'll have no problem. I've been more sore from a 100 mi one day RORR D/S than I was after 250 mi out west. Make sure your bike is prepped and you'll have a blast.

Cruising into Vegas with 500 mi of trail dutst is about the coolest thing I've done on a dirt bike!

Just checked your profile & it looks like you might be on an XR400, that's what I rode both years & it was perfect for me. I had a fork brace, oversize tank, BD rewound stator, 15/42 gearing. The second year I went to 16cs and was glad I did

Thanks for the recommendation and the info on Goler. All of your points echo exactly what I was thinking. We did get hooked up with a shuttle for our truck (one of the D37 leaders helped us out, so a nice easy ride to Palmdale in our truck on Turkey day! That should make our LA-B-to-V a lot more fun.

We know we're in for a challenge, but that's why we do it, isn't it?
Thanks again Yellowjacket. See you in Palmdale!
