Don't forget to use extra HD tubes and rim locks. I would recommend 18-20 psi front and rear for riding in Death Valley. I know it is possible, but I and all my friends have never had even one pinch flat while using 606's and extra heavy duty tubes. I don't use "never leak" because if you do catch a nail and get a flat, "never leak" is a real mess to deal with in addition to trying to patch the flat.

You're gonna have a blast when you get to Death Valley.

I doesn't sound like anyone on the nOObs ride rode over North Pass and I haven't seen any pics of riding conditions over South Pass. I'm guessing the shaded sections are muddy with no snow or ice right now.

Conditions might have gotten more invigorating since the n00b ride weekend.

South Pass is perfect right now. There's a little snow off to the side of the road, but no mud or snow on the road. Here's a few pics, post #326...

I was out there this afternoon...

Fresh snow all the way down to foothills of the Eastern Sierra, but no new snow on Cerro Gordo or South Pass.

North Pass got a dusting, but there are tracks running several miles through the snow, most of them down to the dirt. There is an area that has tracks, but it is deeper snow.

Winds have been in the 30 knot range in Ridgecrest, but it looked like it was nice at the Springs today (< 15 knots).

Can't wait to get back out there....

Cheers,

Vern

Everything should be open now. We went through Cerro Gordo from west to east last Sunday. Very doable and by this point even easier. We also did Hunter Mtn.

Som pics...

Heading down to White Mtn. Talc Rd.

And Hunter Mtn.

Nice report, Todd!!

I'm going to find the boxcar cabin this year.

Snow is gone..time for a "How hot is Death Valley?" thread.

Great report Todd.

I have just been thinking about starting another DV thread for May through November.

The info on this thread has been very helpful for me and I appreciate all who have contributed to date.

Many people, I have talked with that have never been to Death Valley, had no idea it snows there. I didn't realise the number of access limitations there are in DV in Dec - April because of snow and ice.

My off road riding in DV has been limited to the cooler months of the year but now that I know more about the areas of high elevation, I thinking about riding DV year round so another thread about condition in DV from May - November would also be very helpful for those planning trips.

I think starting another thread is a good idea.

Did the recent storms in the past few days bring any snow to any of the passes, north and south pass in Saline Valley in particular?

Time to resurrect this thread

Just over a year ago, I headed to Saline Valley to ride the north/south passes and steele pass but was snowed out after only one day of riding during Thanksgiving weekend.

The forecast for the winter of 2010/2011 is supposed to be milder so hopefully there will be less snow and more riding opportunities for the north/south passes of Saline Valley in Death Valley.

I'm hoping to ride this area before Thanksgiving this year but I will be watching the weather forecast.

Any reports from Saline Valley are appreciated.

All clear this weekend. Highs in the high 60's and lows around 50.
We found snow at Cerro Gordo.

So the snow has already come to Saline Valley area.

I planned to ride the south/north pass about 3 weeks ago but my plans were detoured when my riding buddy crashed on Manly Pass, also known as the escape route east of Trona on his R1200GS, so we rode pavement the rest of the trip after riding to Ballarat.

My first ride over the escape route was solo on my '07 R1200GSA so I thought he would have no problem on his GS but I was wrong. It took all our strength for the two of us to right his upside down GS which had gone off the side of the ridge on a steep down hill and the 95 degree heat sucked the life out of both of us.

I have alot of respect for this area and try not to take any unnecessary chances.

Glad to hear the temps have cooled.

No snow Veterans Day Weekend 2010

Last Saturday, 11/13/10, I rode to Cerro Gordo, South Pass, Warm Springs, Steele Pass and Eureka Dunes. No snow anywhere.

The temps ranged from 45 degrees in Lone Pine at 8 a.m. to 80 degrees at the Warm Springs.

Cerro Gordo, at 8,200 ft. at 9:30 a.m. was 50 degrees.

Rode Pleasant Canyon and South Park on Sunday and it was 80 degrees in Ballarat and 55 degrees up at Rogers Pass at 7,200 ft.

Right now is a perfect time to ride these areas before the snow comes and stays.
