Looks like I missed my window until the snow melts for South Park Canyon.

I'm thinking about unloading the DRZ at Ubehebe Crater and then riding to the race track, down lippencott, to warm springs, over Steele Pass to Eureka Dunes and back to the Crater. That would be a 135 mile loop and I think this is possible even with the snow because Lippencott and Steele Pass don't seem to have problems with snow and ice when south pass, hunter mtn and north pass are closed with snow.

Is this a correct assumption?

If I rode this loop from Stovepipe Wells, it would then become a 222 mile loop. Starting and ending from Big Pine would make it a 215 mile loop so that is why I'm thinking about the start and end being from the Crater.

Have any of you ridden this loop in the dead of winter when there is snow on north and south pass? It seems Steele Pass and Lippencott don't have problems with snow and ice on the road.

What do you think the pass, just west of Crankshaft Junction, would be like regarding snow and ice?

You are correct that lippincott and steele are usually snow free when the other passes are covered.

If its really cold you can expect snow and ice on death valley road. All I've seen is mud.

Hey Jim, I think I'd ride out to Crankshaft first if there is a question of snow/ice on that pass. If there is, you have enough fuel to get back. If you do a clockwise loop and can't get over the top to Crankshaft you probably won't have enough fuel to get back.

Thanks Rob for the suggestion and if snow and ice were a problem in the Crankshaft area there would probably also be snow and ice on Death Valley Road as River Rat suggested which might make it difficult to head into Big Pine for gas.

The pass west of Crankshaft also runs east/west so there is a possibility of shaded sections that might ice up like the two sections on south pass.

No plans yet. I just checked the weather forecast this morning and Furnace Creek will have low's in the high 20's and highs in the low 50's. Everywhere I want to ride has a forecast of very cold temps and that can mean ice on sections of the dirt roads.

I even checked Mojave, thinking about riding at Jawbone, and those temps are going to be very low as well. I might just wait until it gets warmer.

I would like to hear and read a ride report from River Rat as he is supposed to be camping at Warm Springs.

There will be two R1200GS's staying at Stovepipe Wells Jan 3rd and 4th. My buddy and his son are riding from San Luis Obispo this Sunday on the GS's to Stovepipe and then plan to ride to Ryolite, Titus Canyon, Scotty's on Monday and then ride to Badwater, Shoshone and Baker on Tuesday on their way home.

If I can, I hope to join them but I'm stuck in the office covering all the other people who have taken time off.

There is a storm heading for this area tomorrow so any new reports on conditions after the storms comes through are appreciated.

the south pass road had dried out a lot from last report. no more mud hill climb. thin icy sections but not bad.

where is the snow?

Just did the ride you are thinking about a couple of days ago. No issues with snow or ice on that loop. Did hit some snow yesterday going up South Park and Rogers pass.
