Who wants to go?

Interesting reading on the DV message board, especially the possible new changes, should be a great year to ride small bikes around DV.

Let Oliver keep an eye on Nancy, I can leave Thursday !

Thunderstorm cut a large gully into North Pass?

Thanks Cpt. Ron

Wow!!!! Scouting Ride Needed

I knew there was a storm that went through DV but this damage sounds epic!! I have been riding after work on mid day evenings in the heat so I have gotten used to it.

I'm going to plan a scouting ride but first have to find out what the Rangers will allow us to ride into.

Need to make some phone calls. I know a guy who works in DV each winter so maybe he can get me some access.

Sounds like an adventure already.

just a heads up but we were in Bishop last week (at 4,000 feet) and it was pushing 100 degrees.

good luck to Lost Rider and anyone else venturing into the Valley of Death soon.

Death Valley Temps

Yup. It is hot. 120 degrees in DV National Park today and 101 in Bishop.

Lone Pine, one of the closest towns to South Pass, was 99 today.

Looks like the 10 day forecast for Lone Pine is low to mid 90's which would be doable.

I'm going to start watching the weather for a window to head out that way. I can always head up to the Salt Tram or Squaw Flat in the Lone Pine area where you can ride above 10,000 feet where it will be cooler but you eventually have to come back down to the heat.

Just looked at the 8/13/13 DV Morning Report and just about all the roads are either listed as washed out or impassable.

North Pass is listed as "impassable" at Willow Creek.

a few weeks ago there was a flash flood in Owens Valley in and around Bishop.
probably damaged DV roads.
some of the trails coming down White Mountain had major rut run off damage.

That facebook site does have a ton of pictures but they don't say exactly where all these washouts are. The one washout picture I saw is the worst I have ever seen in DV.

Death Valley Riding Condition

In late July 2013, the Death Valley National Park and surrounding area got hammered by a storm, according to an Inyo Co. Maint. Staff person I talked with, two weekends in a row by two major rain storms resulting in flash floods that have washed out many of the back country dirt roads and some of the paved roads.

Lots of pictures about the washouts can be found on the Death Valley Road Conditions Facebook page. Inyo Co. Maint. Staff and a DV Ranger I talked with both said there are very large washouts out there.

Can't wait to see some pictures riders have taken of the conditions.

Some 4x4 adventurers have already checked some of this out and posted pictures on facebook but those of us on two wheels tend to have a different experience.

What I know so far

Actually, I don't know much. I have more questions than answers at this point. In the past, the best information I have gotten is from fellow inmates who have ridden the area.

Inyo County has provided information on North Pass and Death Valley Road and haven't maintained South pass for the past 3 years.

The Care Taker at Cerro Gordo is also helpful with current information.

Death Valley Park Rangers usually have more information than the Daily Report but the ranger I talked with said his 4x4 had been unavailable so he had not had a chance to check out the conditions.

Here is what I know so far:

1. Westside road has some major washouts and is closed
2. Badwater paved road is washed out and closed
3. North Pass is closed and has the big washout I was told by Inyo Co.
4. Death Valley Road is washed out but is expected to reopen in a few weeks
5. Ballarat was hit hard by the floods but no details. This probably washed out Goler Wash again. It was bad last year already.
6. The last flood happened the weekend of July 24, 2013
7. Wildrose is reported to have severe damage and the road is closed
8. Panamint Valley paved road is reported to be washed out and closed
9. Ubehebe Crater to the Race Track is reported to be open (I think)
10.A vehicle (don't know what kind) is reported to be stuck on Lippincott Mine Road and has been left there so this might block the path of anyone trying to get through.

What I don't know:
1. Goler Wash status unknown
2. Mengel Pass and Butte Valley Road to Westside Road status unknown
3. Echo Canyon status unknown
4. Steele Pass status unknown
5. Lippincott Mine Road status unknown
6. The Escape Route (Manly Pass) status unknown
7. South Pass status unknown
8. Loop to the Salt Tram and Cerro Gordo status unknown
9. Crankshaft Junction to Goldpoint status unknown
10. Oriental Wash status unknown
11. Highway 267 to the Hard Luck Mine Castle dirt road status unknown
12. Squaw and Papoose Flat status unknown
13. Hunter Pass status unknown
14. Old Toll Road west of Panamint Springs Resort status unknown. It was hit hard by a flood last year.
15. Saline Valley Road condition in the valley and to the hot springs status unknown

New Death Valley Road Conditions Thread

I have started a new Death Valley Road Conditions Thread.

I should probably have given it a different name since it is not intended as any kind of official reporting thread on road conditions and I am no expert. Just another rider who enjoys riding in Death Valley.

It is my attempt to get current information about Death Valley from fellow riders who have actually been there so I and others can know what to expect. I obviously post other information on the thread not related to road conditions so a different name is probably in order.

Can anyone tell me how to change the name on an existing thread?

lazy?

the # of unknowns suggest that the NPS is lazy or severely underfunded, or that you talked to a know-nothing.

which is it?

All the photos I've seen of the current fucked up roads look like great riding to me, I'm stoked to go explore around DV regardless, some new challenges. Road reports from people in 4 wheels doesn't mean jack crap on ADV IMHO, apple and oranges especially when your on a lightweight bike.
Personally I hope they don't fix any dirt roads outside the park and minimal repairs inside the park, keep the riffraff out.
Road Closed only means something to me inside the park where it's a big ticket to ride past the sign, outside the park boundaries where I like to wander anyways it's game on.

I'm currently negotiating an out of town work gig, if it falls through I'm going to head out asap to explore in the heat and will post my findings.

Looking forward to hearing your DV report Lost rider.

Now this will be a real report of the DV area.
