190 is the only road open in DV

According to the DeathValleyRoadConditions facebook page, the only road open in Death Valley is highway 190. All other roads in the park are closed because of the government shutdown.

This facebook page also says the gas pumps at Stovepipe wells are shut off and no gas is available there.

Also says Panamint Springs Resort (PSR) is open as well as SPW (Stovepipe Wells) and FCR (Furnace Creek Resort?) I would call ahead before planning a trip.

For those of you that might be thinking they can sneak in and ride........a word of caution.

If you get caught you are on fed property and it is the fed court you will be in. Probably just a slap on the wrist, unless, you work directly for the feds or you have a contract with the feds. Then you are in another world of hurt.

It sounds like DV is going to be fun riding this year!

Inyo County Road Crew and Cerro Gordo Update

I just talked with Inyo County and here is their status report:

1. Trona Wildrose paved road is closed at the north end of Trona all the way to highway 190. This means you cannot get to highway 190 from Ridgecrest or Trona using this road to the north.

2. The only way to legally get to highway 190 from the west is via highway 395 in Olancha or Lone Pine.

3. Mazourka Canyon dirt road to Papoose and Squaw Flat on the east side of 395 at Independence is currently closed because of a 7 mile landslide. Crews are working to reopen this.

4. Death Valley road to Eureka Dunes is closed

5. Just talked to Robert at Cerro Gordo and the road is open. There are two important towers up there so it is a high priority to keep that road open.

6. Robert said the road to the Salt Tram is open but there are some deep ruts on one steep section that make that road much more difficult to ride counter clockwise. If you ride it clockwise, you will ride down that steep section. He said some dual sport riders recently turned around there as they were riding it counterclockwise.

7. North Pass is still closed and South Pass is in similiar condition as last year and is signed closed.

8. According to the Yosemite National Park recording about road conditions, Tioga Pass is open to those who want to travel through. You are not allowed to stop and there are no services.

White Mountain Roads update

Another update from Inyo County just in:

As far as they know, the following roads are open:

1. White Mountain Road
2. Silver Canyon Road
3. Wymann Canyon Road.

Looking these roads up on my map, I see all these roads are in the Inyo National Forest. I assume they are closed because of the govt. shut down but would like to know for sure. If I just ride through and don't stop/camp, it might be OK.

If anyone lives in the Bishop area, I would appreciate it if you could ride up Silver Canyon Road to see if the gate is locked or open.

It is cooling off very nice these days. 79-84 degrees in Lone Pine this weekend.

Anyone planing on riding this weekend? If so, take lots of pictures.

I wouldn't enter the park on back roads when its closed, a federal tresspassing ticket is no fun.

Inyo County Update

I received a call from Inyo County this morning to give me an update from what they had told me yesterday.

They said their county workers, who maintain dirt roads in and around the Inyo National Forest, have been running into rangers they usually never see and the rangers are locking gates making fixing the roads much more difficult.

Inyo County now does not know if Silver Canyon, Wymann Canyon or White Mtn roads are open or closed. Wymann Canyon received alot of damage from a storm a few weeks ago so they do not know what shape it is in.

But, all the roads through Death Valley and Yosemite are open "as long as you don't stop". Just passing through

I think there is some confusion in DV related to the weather damaged roads and the shut down of parks. A number of the county road closures have nothing to do with the current Federal assertion of power.... I mean shutdown.

...
pretty sure that only applies to state highways like 190 (and 120 in Yosemite).

I can't read the roads on the map but it appears all dirt roads are shut down in Death Valley. Is that correct?

that is correct. only the paved through highways are open, and no stopping except for emergencies. the park is closed.
