Just returned from a very quick trip to DV and back home. Started a ride report -

- but I'm crappy at those, be warned. Seemed lots of roads were closed according to the ranger at the visitors center...

Kern County passes are getting snow tonight. Down to 2000'.
Be prepared for cold or possibly snow depending on your place of entry.
CORRECTION: Saturday the snow is on the weather guessers radar. Just cold as hell the next couple of days.

CHP writing tickets

My friend is working on the road crew repairing Panamint Valley road. He said the CHP is writing lots of expensive tickets and even arresting people for driving past the road closed signs on Panamint valley road between 190 and Wildrose. The Park Service is writing tickets for people going up Wildrose from PV road. You can still take Nadeau down to Ballarat. It sounds like PV road is open to Ballarat from the Trona side (south). I've driven around signs in Death valley for years with no problem but this may be something new.

...I'm planning to go in less than a month, that's a bummer... may wait for more reports to come in to see if the CHP/Park Svc is still writing tickets then.

Earlier reports seem to say Nadeau is a rock-fest. Wonder if it's gotten better? Will be on big bikes (Tiger, VStrom, 950Adv).

Just received info from a 4x4 friend that South Pass is snowed in... winch fest to get a couple Jeeps out.

Also, North Pass has been graded to the Warm Springs turn off.... don't know about snow conditions on North Pass.

Anyone been up Goler and over Mengel recently? I took my Jeep & off-road trailer over last year, and was considering doing it again depending on current conditions.

Here's a report of Mengel yesterday .... posted by someone else to the DeathValleyRoadConditions Facebook Group:

This picture is of the east side of Mengel on 1/1/14, facing west. Other than this stretch, the rest of the trail was pretty tame. We made it over in a Cherokee with a 4" lift and 31" tires, and I would speculate that any Jeep with good AT tires could handle it in its current state.

Looks the same as it did a year ago. They had just filled in Goler Wash again...civic style.

Just got back...

South Pass is NOT doable... even in a 4x4. NOT. Maybe in 1-2 weeks with warm weather a 4x4 might get through, then a couple weeks later maybe a moto. Talked to a couple different people that spent the night on South Pass digging out. And I scouted it... there are at least 5 snow drifts that are at least 5 feet deep.

This is a "not so bad" part. Gets worse around the corner...

North Pass was just graded.

Saline Valley Rd was being graded.

Lippencott is about the same as it has been the last couple years.

Steel Pass is in good shape... the road from the upper springs to the lower springs is in rough and rocky shape.

I know that exact spot (note the tree) all too well...and this was only an inch or so. It turns right to ice. No, the tires didn't help, but it wouldn't have made too much difference that day. This was almost exactly one year ago.
