Wild Wild West

"Go west young man" was our mantra as WhitneyMike and I headed out to Erath and Palo Pinto counties for a day of experiencing the hard scrabble life that must have been in such a rough and desolate area. The drought continues for another year as all the creeks were still dry.

Cool old antiques from a bygone era.

Mike and I check out the old low water crossings.

The new windmills of the west.

Taking a break in Gordon.

Wouldn't want to do no time in Palo Pinto!

Old Catholic church near Brad.

Old highway bridge over the Little Ioni river near Brad.

Brazos river near Possum Kingdom.

Time to play in the river a bit. It was down from the last time I visited in the springtime but flowing nonetheless.

After it got deep Mike suckered me into going first. Deep sand and mud-I loved it!

Gas it Mike!

When we arrived at the largest river crossing there were spectators so of course Mike went first then!

Beautiful old bridge near Morgan Mill.

Until next time Mike!

Texas Drought

Thanks txplants. I had a couple hours to goof off and decided to stay close to home and check out the situation of the area lakes. Not good. We're halfway through another dry winter and it's not looking good for spring. Here's a channel of Lake Belton which by the way is huge, and you can see it's been dry long enough for vegetation to grow.

There's the water!

Off to Horseshoe Bend and a little mud bogging...or maybe not.

Once again, dry as a bone!

They really should put a reverse on these behemoth's like a Gold Wing, ha!

Some of the roads are quite nice...

...but then-don't go down there!

The last time I felt good for an hour or so!

What's the worst that could happen?

Road blocked by a fallen tree. When I dismounted to move it the mighty VStrom toppled over!

If a VStrom falls in the woods, can anybody hear it? Nope! Miles from civilization I'm afraid.

I couldn't recover it because the side stand was buried in the ground, so I stripped it of as much weight as possible (of course I had a full compliment of fuel) and dug the stand out with my heel. Then after what seemed like forever I persevered.

A well deserved beer! Ride on!

Good ride and excellent posting.

I'm a sucker for anything Texas. That's because there's so much Wild West still alive in this state. If you're riding alone and paying attention, it's possible to feel the history of this country in real time.

I'm down sizing my bike and equipment for a better experience down that way. Will be heading down there in April for a quiet solo birthday.

Nice rides.
Insane weather this winter, 18* morning followed a day later by 80* day. But we rode in both.......and still NO MUD down in the Hill Country.

Yes it was Rman, and I drank one for you too!

Had it been summer and 100* Mike, I'd still be out there "camping" ha!

Texas is so big Joe that I don't know if I will ever see it all, but I'm certainly trying.

Those low water crossings seem a distant memory, eh McRuss?

Good stuff Mudclod,

I've been interested in the Texas stuff lately--------as I'm sick of the ice and snow up here in Illinois.

Planning on heading down your way as soon as it quits frickin' freezin' down there.
Yes----------a weird winter.

If your bike weighs more than 400lbs. You might not make it.

Correct you are Jake! I bought the Strom for mostly pavement but that obviously hasn't happened, ha! I can see this bike for sale soon even though I love it. I down-sized my E-Glide for the same reason.

Hope to cross your path someday Big Dog, love you travels, very envious-work keeps getting in the way of mine.

Not sure yet Rman about Adams ranch. Same weekend as Hippie Happenin' MC Swapmeet. Sure had fun last year though!
