Day 100 To the Lake

Day 100 December 1 El Bordo to Laguna La Cocha

Another fantastic day of riding to celebrate Eranís 39th birthday at around 10,000 feet altitude. Stunning views and excellent roads.

The day ended with a little diversion to an area where Colombian tourists like to go called Laguna La Cocha. We found it to be a really cool place with little launchas taking tourists out to an island on the lake.

Nearby we found a big old hotel where we negotiated the price to 80,000 down from 160,000 pesos including breakfast. In the evening the place was practically abandoned and we were the only guests.

The temperature dropped to below 10 degrees Celsius and it was absolutely quiet. There were no trucks or loud music, no roosters crowing or dogs barking, just silence.

Day 101 Into Ecuador!

Day 101 December 2 Laguna La Cocha to San Gabriel Ecuador

After a very cold night we got going at our usual 9AM. The air was crisp and it looked like rain so we prepared for the worst. The road from the lake to Pasto is incredibly twisty and was a great way to wake up.

Our first stop was the really cool church near Ipiales, the Cathedral de las Lajas. Itís just a short hike down to the church and well worth it.

We stopped for a snack but I opted not to try the fish treats

Next stop was the border. This crossing was like paradise compared to Central America borders. It took 2 hours but it was very simple and no pesky helpers hounding us. By the time we cleared the Ecuador border it was already 3:30 so we decided to ride an hour and start looking for a place to stop. We found the Hostal Gabrielatta in San Gabriel. It was in a really interesting old building with spiral staircases everywhere and a really cool architecture that reminded Eran of some Arab buildings. They had secure parking that was shared by a welding operation during the day but they cleaned up everything at night and moved in half a dozen cars.

I'm trying to get caught up. It's tough when internet connections are weak but I'm only 4 days behind now.

I must have taken 60 photos of the church. It's a much photographed place so I didn't want to post too many and bore you.

Thanks for following along

Day 102 Middle of the World

Day 102 December 3 San Gabriel to Quito

Today was exceptional because I reached a key milestone, the Equator!
This monument was constructed about 7 years ago to mark the exact spot of the equator. The imaginary line itself is actually 15 meters wide but they have pinpointed itís center on this giant sundial. We paid $1 each to enter the site but were also permitted to bring in the bikes. It was a great feeling to cross this point which is very close to half way to Ushuaia.

We arrived in Quito and found the highly praised Casa Helbing but it was full so we located the Hostal Zentrum. We always manage to luck out with great places to stay and this is no exception. After getting settled we set out on foot to find Freedom Bike Rental. The guys there were great and gave us some route ideas and advice about Ecuador. We also got some great T-Shirts!

If your still there go to Uncle Ho's. Also the route to Chugchilan, el Corazon, and Salinas to Chimborazo is epic. See you south!

Funny you should mention Uncle Ho's. That's where we went for our first nights dinner, not a bad little place.

We are currently in Alausi after completing the Quiltoa loop including an epic ride to Salinas (which will be shared as soon as I get caught up)

Day 103 Volcano ascent

Day 103 December 4 Quito

Today we rode as far as we could up the side of the Guagua Pichincha volcano. We managed to make it to 14,800 feet up a steep dirt road. It was an absolutely stunning ride on hard pack mixed with loose gravel and multiple switchbacks. We had to lower the pressure in our tires so we could get some traction. What a blast!

The map shows the point at which we stopped. Smaller dirt bikes and/or more skilled riders can climb all the way to the top.

Looking down from the top

The KLR stalled 100 feet from the top but we got it going again.

a Hostel at the top
You can see the trail to the summit in the background

It's hard to light a cigarette at 15,000 feet.

Thanks Ecuador Freedom Bike Rental for the cool tee shirts!

Day 104 The Quilota Loop

Day 104 Quito to Chugchilan

Sorry Chugchilan is not on Google maps

Today we set out to follow one of the route suggestions from Freedom Bike Rental, the Quilota loop. We opted to take the longer gravel road but first we had to get out of Quito.
The PanAmericana is high speed slab south of Quito so we quickly found our exit to highway 20 and headed west.

At Alluriquin we turned south and began to climb into the clouds.

Most of the afternoon was spent in thick cloud with less than 20 feet visibility. Visors were of no use and we rode at a crawl to keep the water droplets from stinging our eyes.

Iím sure there was beautiful scenery if we could have seen it.

We arrived in Chugchilan to find the Cloud Forest Hostal. A really great place for $15 including dinner and breakfast.
