Thumb Fall Color in Anza Borrego: Go Now!

Parts of Anza Borrego are exhibiting fall color of a different sort. The recent rains created what the park is calling a False Spring. Many flowers are blooming, most plants are green, birds are singing, and it generally feels like spring. This is mostly in Blair Valley, Shelter Valley, and Culp Valley. Blair valley is green, Culp valley is pink and green and yellow. This will probably not last long, so go now. The lower elevations, like Borrego springs, are greener than usual and were experiencing the same false spring a couple weeks ago.

Culp Valley is along highway S2 between Ranchita and Montezuma grade. Culp Valley Photos:

Blair Valley is along highway S22 just south of Shelter Valley. Blair Valley Photos:

Some individual flowers:

Pics taken on Sat Oct 12 and Sun Oct 13. Culp Vally was beautiful at sunrise. I don't know how long this will last; it may be gone by the weekend or it may be last a few weeks. I think Culp Valley may have already peaked and is on the decline.

There is deep sand in Blair valley. Culp valley road has deep sand, ruts, and washouts but is navigable by 4x4 or a competent dual sporter. Most Culp valley pics were taken around the campground.

Also FYI, the state park is reporting about twice their normal visitation due to the fed park shutdown.

I am working on a trip report and will link it in later this week.
