Traffic is incredibly light. I find a parking spot right behind the store/deli in Yosemite Valley.

Even from the parking lot there are great views.

I order what the girl behind the counter recommends and stroll outside to enjoy it. A guy at one of the picnic tables asks me about the Klim pants I'm wearing (he wondered if they were climbing pants), so I sit down and have a nice visit over lunch. Charlie Davis is an interesting man, and one of his many passions is Japanese clocks. Here's his website:

http://www.japaneseclocklogos.com/

We probably chatted about journalism, printing and graphic design for an hour..

I'm not sure what I want to see or where I want to go, but my chain and sprockets are wearing abnormally quickly and I figure I need to find new ones. So I snap some shots and keep riding.

Look how low the water is in the park..

Heading back out of the park, traffic is light and the roads are of course spectacular.

I pass something that looks bad and pull off..

There were a couple of young guys sitting in the back of the ambulance. Hard to believe anyone could survive this..

I kept going and eventually caught up to traffic waiting to be routed around a landslide which had taken out the highway..

You can see the loose slide on the hill past the temporary bridge. Traffic was routed onto what appeared to have been maybe an old rail bed at some point..

The landscape changes quickly as I eventually head North toward Placerville..

The highway passes near or through some neat old towns that really deserve more attention than I'm giving..

More delays..

Once in Placerville, food is easy to find. I eat, make some calls about lodging and relax a bit..

El Cheapo truck stop thermometer with a pen-sleeve clipped to the tank bag. It looks like a small meat thermometer and seems to work pretty well.

Yesterday was a good day but not many miles..

I wake up to sunshine streaming into my cabin..

I'm at a crossroad of sorts. Head west and visit my friends at Alembic in Santa Rosa, or head east and homeward?

East it is.

I'm on US 50 north of Yosemite, and yes there is smoke..

And views..

And a little bit of lane-splitting in South Lake Tahoe to get past some construction.

There is also AdventureMotoStuff http://amotostuff.com/ and new chain and sprockets..

Chad has all the bits I need, and saves me a bit of time and effort by cutting my old chain..

It's time..

And I'm back on the road..

I hadn't looked at a map, so I was curious how much 50 paralleled the train tracks. I rode across a couple of years ago and didn't recall seeing them, but then I hadn't been this far west..

More smokey haze..

Look, Mummy, there's an airplane up in the sky...

The further east I go the more smoke I see..

I wonder if these are in order. Possibly not..

I stop in Austin for camping supplies..

And follow Chad's advice to hit up the local campground about 8 miles down the highway, up in the second pass..

Home for the night..

Camping supplies..

Seems so odd to see so much greenery in the middle of Nevada..

The place even has a pit toilet, complete with permanent residents..

Another good day. Not many miles, but plenty accomplished.

Morning looks good. I slept like a baby.

Perfect sleeping weather.

I got all my stuff packed in under 15 minutes.

Where are my keys?

I can't find them anywhere.

Oh shit.

I have a spare set, but I'm not gonna go there because then they become my only set.

I unpack everything.

Whew! Packed in the tent!

I guess this explains the lack of Grail seekers.

The road.

Lots of smoke in the valley..

Ah, to be on the little DR350. Perhaps another trip..

At this point I'm basically just standing around in the road and enjoying the Zen.

I think I stopped a couple of times for pictures. I really don't remember as it was just a mellow and relaxed no-worries morning on the bike.

Oops.

Riders be ridin'..

I probably could have taken a nap right here an hour ago and been okay, but traffic is picking up.

Time for breakfast in Eureka.. The waitress collapsed we couple of patrons thought at first she was having a heart attack or something by the way she was clutching her 20-ish year old chest. As the situation developed I figured it was more a case of hangover and morning sickness. Breakfast was good and no I didn't get a discount for rendering assistance.

Maybe next time I'll try this place..

Back on the road..

John

It's been hard to ignore just how green the desert is. I hadn't captured many pictures of the standing water from recent record rains, but here is one.

And another.

Sometimes the flat valley floor shimmered and it would take a bit for me to realize that it was water..

Heading further east toward Ely the topography changes a bit and I stop to shed a layer..

East of Ely at a pullout. I've been dodging showers like this one for the duration of the trip. The weather has been great.

Heading into Utah..

The flats..

I stopped for a bit on the east side of Soldier Summit to catch some traffic through a pair of railroad tunnels..

Wanting a shower tonight, a motel in Price sounds good.

Today's bits..
