TDC on a KTM 400 EXC

This is my first KTM.
I just picked up 2002 KTM EXC 400 as an ADV bike for my son as we switch off between that orange beauty and a beastly XR600R.

I just bought the bike today for a great deal, $1900.00

When I try to kickstart her and find TDC, the compression is not so great as to make the kick start lever immovable. Is this normal?

When the XR reaches TDC, it is HARD to move the kickstart lever.

I hope to have this orange badass for a long time to come.

Your guidance is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like the exhaust valve clearances are too loose, so the automatic decompressor is not able to work.

Set the clearances to 1/6th turn from just touching.
