Just wanted to check-in. I know been some time now but not really much to report. As appears to be usual for me when in Houston area, I got sick again! not sure where I picked the crud up, but probably from one of the nieces or nephews but it put me down good.

The weather went to hell... got cold rainy and then heavy fog, and me sniffing and coughing took off. not many pictures as I mostly had my head down fighting the wind.

I did manage a few shots. Started in freeport (BIG DOW Chemical plant) man how do people get use to the smell? but the ride was very peaceful up to Galveston, by the way pretty tame in the middle of the week, with a heavy fog laying in.

Took a few shots on the ferry heading across

Was going to go there but by the time I arrived it was late.. it's Seawolf Park

Sail of another nuclear scrapped sub. Arco has one too..

As you can see the ferry was real busy... only about 8 vehicles on board.

Fog got real thick on the other side, so I ended up in Winnie Tx for the night where the rain started coming down in buckets for about 6 hours.

Next morning it was nasty and cold!! wind was howling too, not many pictures. I will say Port Arthur is a major refining and distribution facility my throat was really hurting after passing along that area, but once I hit 82 in Louisiana it was fairly pleasant had the weather been better.

Another Ferry crossing in Cameron, myself and a couple big riggs.

Did I mention the weather was a tad cold? Oh yea I did! Found a really nice twisty road (highway 14) and ended up in Mayberry... well Lake Arthur, one of those feel good pleasant towns, so I had to walk around to get feeling back in my legs.

This use to be a bank, now it's a B&B of a sort

Got a hot cup of coffee and a killer brownie here, had quite a nice conversation with the gal working there. Worth the stop.

And finally had my first cajun meal "Boudin Crawfish Etouffee" My God that was so good

Well, that's all for now.. need to rest up, parade kicks off tomorrow.

Hola Sam

Sorry it 's been cold down south. It was about 60 degrees here for the past couple of days. Able to ride the Tiger XC to work

Maybe getting sick will help you to forget how much the hip hurts. Hope you feel better and the weather gets warmer.

The Crawfish Etouffee was excellent, and thanks for the cold beer offer, and while I have that area on my list of places to visit, I am afraid it's not on my current routing list. So, I'll take a rain-check.

OK, so a little update. Weather here has not been great, but considering how cold the rest of the nation is... guess I shouldn't complain. Also I been fighting a head cold that just won't let go, so, with that said I am laying low in my room tonight trying to drown it since all other over the counter drugs have only whimpered.

I did some exploring around the area not to mention the cuisine.

The bayou is on the other side of this big levee

Went on down into Cajun country and stumbled across some interesting stuff

Little did I know

Rolled into St Martinville via a back road and this cemetery caught my eye. I had notice that everything is above ground as the water table is very shallow. I was really amazed at how old many of the graves were.

I have noticed since being in Cajun country 95% is Catholic here.

really old brick under plaster

While walking around this one really caught my eye... this person was born before we were even a country much less the thought of one. He was 19 when the Declaration of Independence was drafted and in his mid 40's when we purchased his home from France! and pasted during the second war

I don't mean any disrespect but this popped into my head

Makes one wonder....

After all that it was back to Lafayette for a dinner at Don's downtown a great blacked Flounder then to position myself for the Kickoff Parade.

Must have been in the right place.. got a lot of beads

More to Come

I know, been quite a while since posting, but I been high tailing it back west. While I enjoyed myself in the south I picked the wrong year, as the Polar Vortex has played havoc on me. I came south to enjoy the weather and all it's done on me is rain and hang around 31-35 degrees.

With that said I haul tailed it west finally getting out of the rain and cloud cover in deep west Texas (all back roads) so, because of the weather and my frozen fingers I neglected to do much in the way of photography... and to be honest west Texas isn't much to see except for oil wells and the numerous new drillings underway, not to mention the support trucks owning the roads.

The highlight was my stay in Van Horn stayed at a indian run motel for $30 bucks and ate ate a diner who's little claim to fame was used as the site for a 2005 movie

Young lady working there was very pleasant an amiable individual for sure. She was born and raise there and is dreaming of someday leaving.. but until then... "It's a Living" as she put it with a big ole Texas smile!

From here on it was sunshine and more back roads

Hopefully one more day and Home.

Idaho Sam has surfaced!!

Was starting to worry about you Sam. Thought maybe you got swallowed up in the south and you would never surface again
Keep in touch when you get back into town.
