plating a green sticker bike - a 1984 xl200

Hey Guys, i'm looking at an 84 XL200 to buy for my wife to put around. The bike has current green sticker, but used to be plated. Any idea what it will take to get it plated (street legal licence plate) again? It's got a a box of parts for on road (lights, blinkers, etc).

I know it's very difficult to get a newer bike (post 2003?) plated, but am wondering of the older bike will be easier. Will I need a blinker/brake light, dot tires inspection? Is this at CHP or at DMV?

Thanks for any ideas.

It will be no problem. The blinkers, tail light, brake light, headlight (high and low beams, I believe), and probably horn will need to be inspected by the CHP. I think the speedo is also supposed to work, but I don't know how they would inspect that without riding it.

I had an '83 XL185s that was plated, and it was a great bike. The 60-65 mph top speed kept me off the highways, though. At 65, hot oil would spray my leg, so all my pants had little spots.

Regardless of the past registration, I'm pretty sure the DMV is going to look at this as a conversion. This will include a VIN inspection. Unless they decide that they don't want to do that (because they're lazy) and send you to the CHP....BTDT.

Does the emissions sticker state that the bike is compliant for On-Road Use, or does it say Off-Road Use Only? Being that it's an XL, it should say On-Road. If it says On-Road, you should be good to go (as well as getting the lamp inspection if they still follow their old protocol). If it says Off-Road, you're not going to get a plate directly from DMV.

Or is the emissions sticker missing? If so, that will be a pain.

I always forget about this, since it only recently started being enforced.

I'd just make an appointment at my local DMV and take the pink slip in.

Tell them you want plates and registration. Take it from there. Any other information you get is not very useful. You need to see what is on the computer data base....that is ALL the DMV clerk goes off, nothing else.

DON'T get dual road reg/green.....it's a waste of money. Road reg covers both road and green.

I can see your plan working if the current title doesn't say 'Off-Highway'....

Thanks Ron and Herb, I hadn't thought about looking for the emissions sticker. Tucker - I can't "just take the pink slip to DMV", since I want to be fairly certain I can plate the bike before I buy it.

I'll take a close look at the bike and look for the emissions sticker saying ok for on road use - no sticker, no purchase.

Thanks for the info!

I'm fairly certain the bike was street legal, since I think all XLs were. If the sticker is missing it will complicate things. I didn't see any reproduction stickers for sale on the web either.

I've been looking for some OEM mirrors from a Honda of the same vintage, and figured I would look for the California emissions decal while I was at each website. I cannot find a single picture of it, or any mention of it. Is anyone sure they actually had them back in the 80s? My '83 XL600R didn't have one, and neither did my '83 XL185S.

I did find something called a "Preserve Nature" decal in a complete decal set, but I don't think that's it.
