Question

Thanks for posting here Steve - I for one would be dismayed if we were to lose access - unsure however as to how best to express a view to DOC on behalf of concerned & responsible adventure riders. perhaps access could be on some sort of permitted basis as with Wellington Regional Council into the Akatarawa Forest

Perhaps we could organise some form of submission to DOC - I'll muse on this

They've been threatening for years to remove the hut. I don't know of anyone who actually stays there these days, and there are a number of huts within an hours walk which are better.

Bugger the hut, but loosing the road would be a disaster. I think the real reason for this is that DOC don't want to pay the upkeep of the road. Previously they've put a gate across the road about a km before the hut to keep the riffraff out.

You can just see the hut middle left

Teach you for never doing day 2 of the RRRR...

OK, Iíll sort something out for in a couple of months time. The weather will be more settled, and Iím likely to be at a loose end work wise.

The problem is you have to get the weather right. On a day like today youíd get blown off the hill. I went up once on a mildly breezy day. By the time I got to the top, I couldnít stand up. Iíve heard it said that itís one of the windiest places in NZ. That might be why the trees are only stunted little shrub things.
