Eek Clank in oil tank

07 Super Enduro; original owner; 15,000 miles.

So, the skid plate screws that hold the plate to the oil tank stripped. Finally decided to pull the oil tank and see about getting a helicoil installed at a local machine shop.

I released the screws holding the tank to the bike and then turned it sideways to get out the last bits of oil. When I turned it, I heard a clank. Oh-oh.

I was able to fish out this metal tube:

The tube shows a small spot weld that is broken. I can see a metal plate inside as well, but it's way too big to get out.

I have NO idea how long it has been like this. The bike has been running well, with the exception that, some times, at full throttle, up over 100 and climbing, I get a little stumbling, almost like fuel is cutting out. I attributed that to carb venting. Maybe I was wrong. How fucked am I? Or, am I?

Wonder if it's there to bring return oil to top of the tank?

So long as the remaining piece doesn't interfere with oil flow then should be ok.

Things that make you go hmmmmm.

Yeah, between that and the stripped threads, I bit the $500 bullet and bought a new one. Ouch!

I wonder how long it's been that way, and what the potential ramifications might be. I always thought the tank was just an empty tank. Clearly, not the case.
