This is Jerry taking on some step ups on Poison Spider on the WRR with Wayne and Don handy just in case. The Poison Spider and the Golden Spike are a handful in a day. Do-able on the right bike but you'll be tired when it's over. I really don't think I'd ride my GS on it though. I'm sure there are some folks that could/would do it with alacrity, but I'm not one of them. I really wished that I'd had my Sherco for some of this.

At the Gooney Bird on the way back into Moab after riding the Golden Spike/Poison Spider duo. If you're not sure about riding Poison Spider, go up the first 3 or 4 climbs and see what you think. If those went well you'll do fine to the top of the Mesa. If they didn't go well, you ought to turn around. If they went well and you get to the top, don't try to do Golden Spike unless you have a lot of daylight left because it will definitely take longer and it's (imho) a bit more technical(read rougher than a wood hauler's butt).

Both of these guys have ridden all their lives. Mostly street. Don has been going to Colorado for probably 15 years. But just in the last few years they got more into dirt riding. Wayne said he was 58 when he started riding dirt. They entered their first enduro a couple of years ago. Better late than never.

At the end of Golden spike trail Wayne was the first one up the near vertical 7 ft rock. Neither of them back down from anything.

Day two was a very long day, 273 miles. Day three was much shorter but much more challenging. Not sure which was more challenging. Probably day three.

I think that it was probably around this time that Wayne made the comment "if you ride with these guys you either learn how to ride or you die."

When we got to that last stair step that Rufus was talking about, we met a bunch of bicyclists. They carried there bikes down and then waited to watch us go up it. They were asking how were we going to go up that? I don't think they thought we could go up it. Actually I wasn't sure we could go up it either. Surprisingly enough, we all made it up ok. I think they were pretty impressed.

The stats for day three.

What we thought was going to be just a routine day slabbing it down the interstate, turned out to be our most challenging day. I am glad we did it now that it is over with, but not sure I would want to do it again. I know I wouldn't want to do on again on the little wr250. I have a 400 KTM EXC with a recluse clutch that would have been much more suited for that kind of stuff.

You are right LittleWan. We need to learn to slow down a little. Rufus and I both have a racing background, enduros and hare scrambles mostly, and we tend to get into that mode when we are riding.

By the way, I love your ride reports.

We met these people at the top of Poison spider. They made the remark that they couldn't see how we had gotten up there on motorcycles. And I said I didn't see how they got up there on their rzr's.

Guess I am going to have to learn though. I actually bought one of those a couple of months ago but haven't had a chance to ride it anyplace like that. I know now though, what it will do. If I just have the balls to do it on 4 wheels.

Moab sure is fun, isn't it?

Looks like this was the perfect alternative to a rainy day on the UTBDR!

Another shot of the place Where Dickie crossed Gold Spike Crack, from the point where he was looking at it.
