That's good news. I hope the nuclear option can be avoided.

Got my first two volumes of Canadian history via media mail today. Media mail is great. It's so slow that it's almost like Canada Post. Significantly cheaper, however.

Wait for it. . .

There's gonna be a quiz. The results will be 50% of your total riding score. Don't worry, Governor Generals won't be covered.

OK, one Governor General question, but it will be for extra credit.

I always thought that Michaëlle Jean was kind of hot, and that made me really uncomfortable. It's difficult to tell the boys that you've got a thing for the GG without getting a lot of strange looks.

OK. Read this carefully. I had to translate it into Canadian, so there may be some errors:

David Johnston leaves Ottawa westbound on the 417 at 14:00 at 100 kph. Stephen Harper leaves Arnprior eastbound at 14:10 at 95 kph on the 417. Which team will be favoured to win the 2014 Tim Horton's Brier?

Well, given that both Johnston and I are from the Soo, I gotta go with Northern Ontario.

Here's one for you. In what schlock movie was the GG the inspiration for a character? For bonus points, where did he play hockey? Hint, it wasn't one of the Hanson brothers and the place wasn't Johnstown.

I know Johnston played hockey while at Harvard, and went to the Bruin's training camp before he studied law at Cambridge. I have no idea about the schlock movie.

What's this about him trying to eliminate violence from the sport? You'll lose the entire audience down here if you do!

He had too many concussions. Now he's not sure who he is, let alone what country he's in.
You guys won't be happy until they allow fully automatic assault sticks

He was at Hahvahd with Erich Segal. Not Steven's half-brother. Schlock, not chop-socky.

You'll take away our assault hockey sticks when you pry them from our cold, dead fingers!

Likely the reason curling never took off here. Too civilized.

You're probably unaware of the full-contact no-armour version.

You could really mess someone up with one of those stones!

The GG question was taken in this rough paraphrase from our own Mark Twain:

"If corn is fifty cents a bushel and wheat a dollar a peck, how many frying pans does it tale to shingle a meeting house?"

Which is farther, from here to Montreal, or by train?

Depends on traffic. I don't go to Montreal any more. Every time I was there, it made me ask this question: "Largest nation by land area on earth, and there's still no place to park?"

Well, I'm proud to say that I cooked a really good borscht for supper tonight. I'm of Polish and Lithuanian extraction, and borscht, or beet-root soup is soul food for me. Can beets grow up there in Newfoundland? I've found that they'll grow anywhere that potatoes will, but I could be wrong. I just know that this is particularly good eating. There's most of the pot left, if anyone's hungry.
