Another night of camping under the stars, just of Ruta 40, it does not get any better than this
Will you take the shortcut from Esquel towards Faltefufu? It's a short road, just a bit loose in one place. We came the opposite way on that from Chile to Argentina.

Riding solo!..............must be cold at night

Yes, I am maybe 50 km west of Futaleufu, Chile. Found a great camping spot, next to the river, just off the road. I can't believe they have WIFI strong enough to post. Tomorrow I head on the Austral toward Chile Chico.

Will hit the sack early tonight, last night the "parilla" lasted well into the night and this morning was quite a late start.

Cool2 Day 4, just another day on the Austral

In Puerto Tranquilo.

The last few days have been mostly camping and unpaved road; Call it my own little Dakar, me against myself.

All is good, but without the official adventure photographer you need to make a lot of stops to take decent pics.

The Austral holds true to its reputation, I think what makes it so amazing is the ever changing landscape in such short distance. Forest, mostly coniferous, into valleys, changing from rolling fields yielding to fast running rivers, emptying into lakes with turquoise glacial waters, abrupt mountains, and ice caped peaks.

The road is tough, at least for my bike-weight to skill ratio. I can maintain about 60 kph and with occasional peaks at 75, but it is loose gravel over hard pack washboard dirt, some sandy bits, and lots and lots of soft gravel with big rocks where they are paving the road. Traffic is constant so lots of dust, many many bicycles; those guys and gals are the brave ones.

It's tough; the reward is there; I am in puerto tranquilo, tomorrow I visit the "Cavernas de Marbol" and leave Chile for good when I cross over to Argentina, running to TDF.

Still sunny but getting colder.

I have so much more to share; all in due time.

Valentino out...

Hi Mike,

Great to hear from you. Made it to El Califate today and heading for the glacier tomorrow. I camped in El Bolson. and crossed over back to Chile, for the Austral.

Couple of challenging bits, along the way, be careful with gas on your smaller tank, most of the pueblos have one gas station. Some of the "under construction bits" were a bit gnarly on the big bike.

I crossed back at Chile Chico into Argentina, that "smaller" road is for the most part in better shape than the Austral.

Enjoy, definitely one of the highlights of the trip

Wink 4 Days 4 Pics

From the campground in El Calafate. Here are four small photos, one of each of the last few days. Simply awesome riding.

Completed 620 km today, with a longish 200 km stretch on Ruta 40 . Mostly loose gravel on hard pack dirt.

Yikes

Cavernas de Marbol, Puerto Tranquilo, Chile

Carretera Austral on my way to Chile Chico, riding around the shore of lake General Carrera.

First look at Patagonia

A glorious day on Ruta 40

Best I can do for now.

Time for some meeeeaaaat

Back in Chile one last time, crossed at Laurita with the rudest custom officers of the trip yet, I think I was their only customer of the day, and I was one too many.

Sending this from Puerto Natales, no internet at the hostal.

Perito Moreno was awesome and some.

Sent from the top of the world

Glad you are tagging along YetiHunter, I will be moving to Vancouver later this summer, and looking for riding partners.

Cool2 Terre De Feu

Leaving Puerto Natales, ride to a quick ferry crossing the straight of Magellan, then an even quicker border crossing, and here I am, end to the world, Ushuaia, 25000 + km from Victoria.

I can't believe it.

This post is for the riders only, everybody else just thinks we're insane.

Delirium tremens

Sorry for the smallish pics, it is all my end-of-the-world internet connection allows.

Good night, tomorrow I will attempt to shed some more light on the matter.

Valentino out...

Thanks guys, it felt good, bitter sweet, the journey shortly coming an end, a quick 3000 km run back to Buenos Aires, and the other reality, the life we succumb to will rear its head, surely, relentlessly.

The journey is the destination, the destination is the journey, sounds a bit Mcluhanesque, but in fact they are inseverable one from the other. It is never, always about one without the other, why we ride, why we love to ride, beyond the heat, the cold, and the wet.

As a destination is reached a new journey begins, and so the endless cycle perpetuates itself.

During this trip the young ones told me with a glitter in their eyes, "I hope I will"

The middle-aged one said with envy, "I wish I could"

The old one looked at me, and with regrets said, "I wish I had"

This conversation has been continuous, and universal since I parked the bike waiting for the ferry that took us from Victoria to Port Angeles, until this morning when I went to snap the mythical shot at the end of Ruta 3. The same conversation I had over, and over, and over again only with a slight variation in emotions between young and old; hope - envy - regret.

Have the ambitions of your dreams, not just ambitious dreams. Never wait until you can't. Never let anyone tell you what you are capable of. Never fool yourself into thinking that it's about money.

We are all dealt different hands, we choose how we play them, it is all about the choices that we make, let your imagination be you guide.

Must go prepare for the ride to Buenos Aires...
