Assateague Ponies

First ride post here. I'm new to advrider and have been reading other ride posts and realize getting on my bike and traveling more is what I want at this point in my life.
I've been riding for 12 years, but mostly on vintage and modern Vespa's. I owned a Suzuki GS500 for a number of years, but sold it four years ago. I've ridden the Vespas to rally's all over the northeast, and last year rode from Brooklyn to Montreal solo on my GTS 250. That and following two friends online as they traveled the US on their motorcycles got me wanting to travel more and further.
I bought a BMW F700GS in July. I had already planned a trip to Acadia Maine on the scooter, so I did that on the GTS in August.
I had some time off at work that I had to take or lose before the end of the year, so now that I had panniers on the BMW I wanted to take a short trip to end the season and give me a taste of what it will be like on the Blue Ridge Parkway trip I'm planning for next spring.
I looked at a map and figured Maryland would be a good place to go and when searching for camping I came across Assateague Island. I had loved the book Misty when I was a little girl and always wanted to go, so pony watching it was.

Bike on the Cape May Ferry

As soon as I pulled in to the park the first group of horses was there to greet me

I was surprised at the number of surfers here

Full moon rising

Another group of ponies. They have full run of the island and are still very wild, so there are signs everywhere saying to stay back as they kick and bite. Still they are used to people and think nothing of stopping for lunch in the middle of someones campsite

Moon still in sight in the morning, my little tent at the bottom

Back home with my first trip sticker in place

I'll still be riding in the winter unless there is snow on the ground, but the camping gear will be put away until spring and the thought of many many more trips will get me through until then.

I need to get back down there, been 30 years.

I enjoyed your report, welcome to ADV.

If you are looking for reasons to ride, there are a mess of tag games in and around the city. You'll find them in the northeast regional forum http://advrider.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=26

Those ponies aren't as sweet when you are on a bicycle ;) . Rode the Seagull Century from Salisbury to Assateague and back. Assateague is a pretty cool place. Get your butt to Western Md !!

Thanks guys. I've been chatting with friends and hopefully we're going to start planning a Vietnam trip for end of 2014 or 2014.
Ride ride ride, that's what my life is going to be about for years!

My wife and I rent a house on Chincoteague every spring. We have spent a lot of time in Assateague on the VA side. I've never seen a campground there.

This little guy must have been born the night before the photo was taken. It was still covered in birth gook and learning how to walk.

Cool report! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the pics of the new baby pony.
I stayed at the Maryland state park campground - right at the dunes to the beach. In the summer it might be a bit nuts, but being weekdays in Sept is was nice and relaxing.
I'm loving the 700. The size is right and to too ungainly to deal with city riding.

Nice picts, thank for the report.
Camping there is nuts in the summer.
Last time I checked a reservation was necessary.
I would like to try it like you did though.

Nice report! You are going to love riding the Parkway. It's one of my favorite places to ride.
