Garmin 2720 info
this looked kind of interesting, from Darrel at tvnav:
--------------------------------------------------------------- Hi, we just received our first, small shipment of 2720's. There is a LOT of mis-information floating around on the internet about the 2720 that isn't true. Over the weekend and yesterday we had several emails and phone calls telling us that the 2720 could not load waypoints and routes. This sounded very, very unlikely to me so I was very anxious to try it as soon as we got them. My 2720 is currently loaded with all of my waypoints and I created a route to test that and it loaded fine. I'm not sure where all of this bad info. came from but it's just that.....garbage. Keep in mind though that the 2720 (at this time) does NOT include any MapSource software so unless you already have some MapSource software or other compatible software you will not be able to load waypoints and routes into the unit. So far in the 5 minutes I've had with the 2720 I'm impressed although if I was a normal customer I'm not sure I'd be willing to spend the money to dump my 2610 and get the 2720. If anyone has specific questions about the 2720 ask me and I should be able to answer them now. Thanks. Darrel Goheen GPS@tvnav.com http://www.tvnav.com |

Hello:
I am fairly new to the GPS market (although a self proclaimed gadget geek) and have a 2720 unit. I do not see where it is possible to enter GPS coordintates directly. Is this possible? I need to be able to find rally sites and back country locations via this method. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, -Mike |

You can only do it by editing a Saved location. Check out Page 14 of the manual. Basically, it's a waypoint and you can use the keypad to enter the lat long.
Personally, I would never do that, it's a royal PIA. Much easier to do it all ahead of time in Mapsource on a PC and download the waypoints into your GPS before you leave.

I figured that out last night as I was going through all of the menus.

I literally stumbled upon it. Thanks for the effort though! There was no reference to it anywhere else in the manual.

A couple of questions please:
Are these units completely rain-proof? If all of the maps are preloaded, can you download updated map information from Garmin? Thanks. Great forum.

You can go either way on preloading maps, the selection depends on how far and where you ride and how much time you want to spend setting up your routes on the PC before you ride.. For me, most motorcycle planning is best done on the PC ahead of time, but I have spent time at camp sites in "jungle mode" doing it on the GPS as well, works but it does suck. I will spend countless hours looking for neat places on websites and from other riders and then plan routes on the PC. Planing means both actual routes and also creating and storing waypoints on the GPS for optional points of interest that I might want to check out if I have time. Hope this helps.

mapsource software
My situation: I do not currently have any GPS software on my home computer. Currently have an eTrex and I'm pretty sure I want the 2720, plan to purchase in March.
So if I want to plan routes on my home computer and then download them to my GPS unit, am I correct in thinking that I need: 1. MapSource Trip and Waypoint Manager (NOT included in purchase) 2. an ac power source to use the 2720 in the house while downloading (included in 2720 purchase) 3. a USB cable (included) Am I right? Anything else, or other software recommendations? Thanks

If you call Garmin they will either send you the Mapsource CD for free, or they might charge $15 for shipping and handling, I have heard of both happening. What you will need is a mounting arrangement for your GS and a bike power cable.
