Just getting your toes wet but you will have fun.
Enjoy

You're welcome. This RR won't hold you over for long before you get the shakes again though

Awesome RR, thanks for taking the time to post your tracks. I'm headed down to Todos Santos for a month in Feb, bringing the WR not the GS for this trip, hoping to use a few of your tracks. Gracias!!

Yes, a nice guy and humble too, no pretentiousness at all. Still rides well on a bike too!

I'll be checking out for a few days and continue this RR when I get back.
Off to where else...Baja!

Have a good time off for a few days playing in Baja. I'll wait patiently for you to get back and continue this ride report. Like others I'm looking for ideas for my next ride in Baja.

P.S. Malcom Smith is my hero. To bad when I had the chance to meet and talk with him a few years ago during the Mexican 1000 I got super shy and couldn't talk to him. He's an amazing man as well as an amazing rider.

Great RR. How much does one typically budget out for a trip like this?

I don't want to speak for Scott but here is my Budget per day on the 5 trips that I have taken to Baja

$30 per day for Hotels.. most cost about $60 per night.. you can find them for as low as $30 or as much as $75 like at Mikes Sky Ranch
$20 gas per day (40 mpg and I normally ride 160 miles per day)
$30 for Breakfast lunch and dinner...
$15 for beers
------------------
$100 ish per day.. but you can do it cheaper if you want some guys camp and don't drink so they cut it to $45 per day

On a 20 day trip you will need at least 1 set of tires also so add another $160
and maybe an oil change $30 in oil and tranny fluid

Well, I'm back from the 1st ever Baja Rally. Good time.
Next day on the RR coming up.

I was able to keep it at about $75/day. It depends on what hotels and restaurants you desire and how many alcoholic drinks you swill. I usually only had a couple o margis, pina coladas or cervesas a day.

Day 16, Campo Rene to Bahia Tortuga

I parallelled along the coast up tp Bahia Asuncion in the morning where I stopped at Shari and Juans place. We chatted over a beer for a while and she turned me on to a place in town for some mojo de ajo clams for lunch. Shari is frequently on Baha Nomads and is always open to visitors. Malcom Smiths group had stopped here a few days earlier on their way south and Shari had lunch catered for the whole group.

I was looking for something to ride that was a little more entertaining besides the main dirt road headed north so I found a small trail through some sand dunes right on the ocean bluff. The trail petered out and even though I was in a pretty remote area I kept going and eventually found a dirt road again.

I found a hotel in the dirty dusty town of Bahia Tortuga which is almost to the point of Punta Eugenia. The propriator of the place was a grump who appeared to be hating her life stuck here. I wouldn't want to be stuck in this shithole either and would be on my way early tomorrow.

Some other blokes were staying there who sailed in on a racing yacht. They would sail to the starting point of the next race which was Long Beach, CA this time and the owner and his race crew would fly in and race the Yacht (to Hawaii this time). It was a full time job sailing around the world from race to race and maintaining the boat.

Tomorrow will be more interesting, stay tuned

Day 16 route:

Riding along the seashell bluff

This looks more interesting

The trail soon disappears so I wing it to the mts ahaed

Yup, can't get enough pink!

The bay

The race yacht

End day 16

Dreams of Baja

Have always wanted to ride Baja and every RR I read tells me it time to start putting that dream into a plan. So where do you start if your coming from Canada and need bikes, rent in Baja or in the US and cross? Do an organized ride? What about a combo of bikes and RV or better to hotel it and camp?

Thanks everyone for the compliments.

CanadianX, I think a good way to start out would be to book a tour with someone who has bikes. I would try Baja Bound Moto as I have heard some positive feedback about them. That way you could just fly in to SD and you're good to go with no bikes to hassle with.
