Across USA On Virago 250

Effective tomorrow I will be two weeks into my trip from Rochester NY to visit family in Bellingham WA on my 2007 Yamaha Virago 250. I am currently camping in Cody Wyoming where I went to the night rodeo and the Buffalo Bill Western museum. Also had a meal at the Irma Hotel built by Buffalo Bill. About 2700 miles so far with another 1100 or so to go.
I have been avoiding interstate highways as much as possible and generally followed the route of the Oregon Trail from St. Louis to Casper Wyoming.
Weather has generally been good aside from heavy rain between Rochester and Cleveland, and high winds across the plains states. Winds were gusting over 35 mph between Scottsbluff Nebraska and Casper Wyoming, which made for interesting riding.
Bike has generally performed well. I did notice excessive chain and sprocket wear when I was camping near York Nebraska so decided to wait there for replacements to be shipped in view of distance still to be covered.

You are on a good bike for the trip.
I changed out my chain and sprockets at 5,000 miles, something about the OEM set.

Have a fun safe trip.

I had a 2007 Virago 250 - used it as my commuter bike for about 8,000 miles. "The Piglet" was a good little bike - but I grew up on enduros, and I live in an area with about 5,000 miles of dirt roads and trails, so I sold Piglet to my nephew and purchased a 2012 KLR650.

It's understandable that you're avoiding the interstates - hell, you get a better "feel" for the country on the back highways anyway. Enjoy the ride!

Virago 250 Way to go

have just finished a 10,000 mile trip around Europe on my '99 Virago 250. Chain and sprockets were pretty good when I left but I neglected to oil them regularly and had to replace them in Debrecen in Hungary. Apart from that the only problem I had was breaking rear wheel spokes which only ceased after a replacement 20 Euro wheel in Hungary.

Spent most of today in Yellowstone National Park. Pleasantly surprised at how well the bike is doing at high altitudes--7000 feet Plus. Now camped in Livingston Montana and planning tomorrow's ride.

Easy ride yesterday from Livingston to Missoula Montana. Upon preparing to leave Missoula this morning discovered rear tire was losing air. A tiny bit of wire no more than a half inch long had created a pinhole leak. Two hours to replace inner tube and on the road again.

Arrived safely in Bellingham and visiting family. Ride over North Cascades Highway was spectacular--seemed like there were more motorcycles than cars.

Currently in Omaha for reunion of Air Force airborne communication reconnaissance aircrew. Will be heading back to Rochester Sunday. Will likely use US 30 and 20 to avoid interstate.
