Question South Point, Hawaii

Big Is., Hawaii: What are access rules in and around South Point?

* There are a lot of double tracks... Are those legal?

* How far can we go towards windward coast?

* DNLR posted signs but, not clear ( to me ) on what "OFF ROAD" is because trucks and bikes were on the dirt in many places.

* Is "OFF ROAD" defined as trailblazing or is it up for local intupretation?

We drove all the way from the point to the green sand beach, like everyone else.

We walked all the way (both ways) and had several 4x4's pass us. Probably best to stay on the 2-track?

The way it's been explained to us by Dept of Conservation and Resource Enforcement (DOCARE) Officers is that you need to stay on the "Established" double track and you can't create a new route cross country i.e. between existing tracks or to the shore. A big No No is climbing the edge of the Cinder Cone that the Green Sand Beach is in the center of (never mind that there is two track all over it and down the ridge) just resist the temptation. And you must be on a Street Legal Machine! Go down there with a MX or trail bike and you might be walking home!

Also be aware that some of the 4x4 crew say it's the motorcycles that ruin "Their" roads down in that area and have been antagonistic to us.

That said, it's a nice area to visit now and then but not a Riding area for most of us, it's more of a camp, fish, cruise and Kite/Wind surf, chill area.

One, of many, problems with DLNR is that they post signs that DOCARE can't realistically enforce since there is no legislation or "Rule" to back it up in court. There's a DOCARE officer on this Forum that is always happy to give us the left and right limits from an enforcement perspective, PM me and I can put you in touch with him if you want.

Key to it all is to be respectful and don't do anything that you wouldn't want somebody doing in your house, it's a beautiful place enjoy it.

Of course you can walk anywhere you want all day and night.
