Need a favor in the northern Bay Area

I am working on a little project and need to get some measurements off of an xr650l. If anyone has one around Marin county that they want to let me throw a tape measure at I would appreciate it.

I don't know anyone in your area but I'm here 24/7. Laid up for a while.

I could certainly find some time to get to sf. I am laid up right now as well, recovering from a partial shoulder replacement, and have decided to build my "dream" bike while I am unable to ride. Let me know if there is a time I could swing by for a few measurements of your 650l

Thanks

You're supposed to do them as a set, like fork seals.

If you want to come over to Folsom, I have two you can take measurements from.

What exactly do you need to measure?

I am trying to figure out how much modifications it will take to cram a hawk gt v twin in one. I am thinking the frame will need to be stretched by about an inch, and the cradle will need to be widened by about 2.

I just had a partial shoulder replacement and am looking at roughly 2 years off a bike, so I need something to occupy my time that used to be spent riding.

That would be a great project. I always wanted to put a twin in my '83 XL600R, figuring the result would be a near perfect bike. I also looked at the sideways v-twin Honda made for the Silver Wing, but that one also has shaft drive, which would be a PITA to install on the XR.

You might also consider using a parallel twin to avoid having to change the frame.

Of course, Honda made the XLV, but parts are so hard to find for those.

The other bike I'm looking at is a klr650. I think the klr would require a little less modification to the main frame, but I am not a fan of the geometry either.

I am currently building the engine. It's a hawk gt motor bored to 700cc, mega cycle cams, and a set of 41mm FCR's. it should be a great motor for the type of riding I have in mind.

The lighter bike sounds like a better project. The only other bike that I think would be good would be a DR650, simply because you can get adventure racks for it, such as the MMoto rack.

I have the motor out of my XRL and I also have a XR600 and XL600 bare frames on the floor if you'd like to measure any of them.
