CannonTracks - Lakewood Tour - Chequamegon-Nicolet NF WI

This is a fun 100 mile ride in the Lakewood District of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest in NE WI. It takes in some points of interest in the area, runs some great paved and gravel roads, and has a little two-track and ATV trail on it. It is suitable for large adventure bikes.

The track starts at Chute Pond, runs clockwise, and ends in Mountain.

Some pix to follow.

Start of the track.

Dam at Chute Pond

Looking up at the overlook.

Shelter at Green Lake.

Some nice two track.

Fun pavement.

Remnants of a forest fire.

If you catch this place during the day, stop and visit. It is a tree seed orchard. Some neat stuff inside.

Well protected by a deer fence.

Stiles to get in and out of the orchard.

Big, beautiful trees. Best to visit in the daylight though.

Near Paya Lake.

Campsite here.

Lots of deer around.

Well preserved remains of an 1880 logging camp.

Oconto River

Forbes Spring. They dredged an 8' deep ring around the spring with a shallow spot in the center as a haven for wildlife.

Another old logging camp.

Young turks.

Mountain Fire Tower. You can climb it if you like.

I just acquired my first DS and am hoping to do part or all of this track on Sunday. I know the government shutdown had impacted the forestry service...would any of this be closed as a result?

Some gates might be closed at federal sites (fire tower, etc) but the roads will be open.
