Cold stall? '08 990

'08 990 ~5,000 miles. 10W50 oil. No mods. Stock exhaust. Stock mapping as far as I know.
Saw a few threads on this but nothing concrete as to the cause. Last two start outs. Engine cold when started. Cool ambient temps but definitely not cold. Bike warmed up a bit before starting out, maybe a minute. I go about 1/8th mile, riding very easy and bike stalls, seemingly when shifting and coming to a stop. I'd swear I was upshifting at the time although coming to a stop sign(like 1st to 2nd gear). Definitely not low enough revs to stall from that and I'd swear the clutch was in at the time. Has happened only twice and only under those circumstances. Once it's warmed up, no problems whatsoever.
New bike to me. Did not happen at all the first 1,500 miles I had it but those were mostly highway miles. I've really only started it from cold maybe 10-12 times.

my '11 does the same. No big deal...starts right away and I just keep 'er goin. Probably something to do with the F.I. system not being "fully awake" yet...not enough/too much fuel going to cold plugs.... something like that.
I had a similar, albeit much worse problem with my old Ducati 996 SPS; too much fuel was being barfed onto the plugs and when cold it would stall out if the revs dropped below a point, A new EPROM mapped for the change in exhaust fixed the issue.

Could be that the KTM F.I. computer is playing catch up when cold starting like that.

It's happened maybe twice to my '13 990 in about 5500 miles. First stop about 100 yards from my house - stall. Starts right up and goes, no probs. Never gave it a 2nd thought. My Vic Highball did the same thing every now and then.

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like nothing to worry about. Hasn't happened again but I'm keeping the revs up a bit when warming up.

I also have an 08 990, have owned it for over 1 year now. Always warm up to 4 bars,I believe that is by the book. Also if i am lazy on th ethrottle and down shifting mine will stall. I've watched the tack stumble low than stall. At some point will get the bike to a tuner and tweek it a bit, for now just a blip on the down shift and she's happy (usually)
My .02.
Enjoy

Hydraulic clutch.
Before you pull away give the clutch a few squeezes to "pump it up" and see if that helps.
My Husaberg will stall out on the second shift if I don't pump it up on cool mornings. It works fine for the initial shift into first, but if I immediately try to clutch shift at low revs into 2nd it'll stall.
My 990 Adventure has a Rekluse, so no worries on stalling.

My 520 has had a Rekluse for like 6 years. I plead clutch ignorance...lol

This time of year with the weather changing (cooler temps), you may want to do the 15 minute idle to recalibrate the FI system.

My 08 did it too

When I got my 08 it did the same thing, but not anymore. Not sure what made it go away, re mapping, FI cleaning, or TPS. My guess is TPS as that setting will change slightly after the bike warms up. The situation that seemed to cause the stalling for me was when I pulled in the clutch while burping the throttle. Bike would stall then run like shit for a while. I had read about this somewhere else on the forum.

I had to do a massive clean out of my FI and the brass air sensor jets in the intake below them. While the FI was off I made a slight adjustment to the TPS with a meter (sorry can't remember the exact numbers). I had run TuneECU just befor this to remap to attempt to fix the problem, which it didn't, but I had made a note on TPS settings, cold and hot, and made the adjustment to get it back into range. This May or may not have fixed the problem as I did several things at once while the bike was torn down

Good luck with finding a fix, I know how aggravating this can be....

Also the bike came from Colorado to Tn but I rode it there, so I'm assuming it had time to adjust on the fly. I'll do the 15 minute idle and also let it warm up a bit more in the mornings. Thanks all.

My 2012 990 Adv was stalling occasionally, usually after a cold start. I've bypassed the o2 sensors with the plug (available from Greek guy on ebay) a few months ago; haven't stalled since.
