I may have some details muddled up, but the story is something like this:

On day 1, two riders Dale Thomson #135 and Johan Jordaan $137 got stuck in the riverbed. First one, then both bikes broke down, and they had to walk out. They got out at around 02h30 and phoned Kevin Thomson #136. He immediately went to fetch them, and off they went to recover the bikes.
They eventually arrived at the camp last night at 10 o'clock.
Not one to give up, Johan with the help of KTM Cape Town worked on his bike till 2am, got the bike running and is riding today!
4 hours sleep since Sunday 4am ....

True Dakar spirit .....Awesome...

Nice fotos of this event. :)
As a fan of the BMW G450X I find the following foto.
Does anybody know what kind of cockpit-shield this is? How was it fixed?
Maybe someone has some more detailed fotos or know the person who is riding this bike. :)
Thanks a lot.

Special 1 had multiple crossings. I managed to drown the bike in a pool inside the river while climbing the bank. The rear wheel sank into a soft patch and the exhaust took on water.

The result:

Once out of the water, I stripped off the tank and coil relocation brackets to get to the plug. Took about 20 minutes to get it out with the on board tools. Pumped out the water, but the battery died before getting all the water out. One of the back markers stopped on his 660 Rallye to give me a jump start. We just could not get the bike started. I was recovered by a Land Cruiser pick-up. Not much else that would get through that rock garden with a bike on the back.

The end result:

Hiding behind an XR650L.

At the end of the special stage, I manage to get it started using a Pajero's battery. It took about 15 minutes of intermittent cranking. I let it idle for 20 minutes during which water continued to be spit out. I finished the liaison on my own steam, but was classified DNF, for obvious reasons. I'll start tearing down everything today to check for damage.

Day 2 was interesting. Some portions on the liaison was beyond my comfort and possibly skill level, but I managed it by hook and crook. Saw flooded river crossings, mud, culverts, rain, hail, snow and a pass that washed away that was the roughest riding I've ever down.

The special was deep, soft sea sand for 150 km. I live in the Kalahari, so I'm no stranger to sand. But this was twisty tracks. You cant see around the next corner and you cannot use momentum. It sucked, but I survived. This was followed but a middle section of full speed straight sand running. I sat on the back of the seat and pinned it at 140 kph to keep it running in the track. There was only 2 lines with no option of making your own to a fence on the right and bushy dunes on the left. I had a big off (the only one I had for the race) doing about 125kph around a slight bend. It was one of those - not did I break anything- rather a did I break something off - crashes. Only casualty was a mirror and a sore neck.

The deep sand was followed by a dirt road section with about 6" of loose sand on top. Normally this would have been scary, but after the deep sand section, it was only an irritation.

I made it to the bivvy. By that time, my neck had stiffened up. Went to see the doc and he withdrew me, saying something about C3. I could not see anything inside 75 cm in any case, it was just a blur. However, soon the stuff he gave me started to work and I went to see the safety officer. In conjunction with the doc, it was agreed that I would be allow to do special 2 of day 3, but not special 1, due to the difficulties in recovering riders and bikes.

The Oryx kits are fibreglass or carbon fibre. Anyhow, they break. But they're easy to repair with epoxy.
