Closed the page upon reading that misinformation.

That is a distinction w.o difference to 90% of the people reading that press release. The audience for that press release aren't Dakar fans; the job of the press release is to get non-fans to become fans. To the target audience a written distinction between classs (even something as blatant as bikes/cars) comes off as quibbling and diminishes the claim.

I don't like it much, but I understand the logic behind it.

True. Not enough coffee yet for this hombre in the morning. I just got done catching up on who is Peter Harding and had Lewis on the brain.

Robby, Robby, Robby. Mini, Mini, Mini. Why is everyone ignoring the elephant in the room.

Kamaz, Kamaz, Kamaz. Iveco, Iveco, Iveco.

Kamaz finished 3rd overall last year. 4 trucks in the top 10.

One stage that Gordon won had a truck 4 minutes behind.

On stage 9 a truck was over 2 hrs ahead of the first car. Was this a heavy sand stage or river crossings?

Kamaz has a new truck. Iveco had a new truck last year, and was fast, but suffered a failure.

The truck teams are teams and work as such. Race truck #1 = flat out. Race truck #2 = assists if necessary. Fast service and heavy service trucks behind.

Could a truck win this thing, overall???

Doesn't look like enough lights on the green quad looking rig. Not aggressive tires, either, but maybe they change them for the special stages....

I don't think the de Rooy team thinks they are "following".
That's no Chevette he is shadowing. Ari Vatinen's Group B Peugeot.

Hey I love the trucks as much as the next guy but
that is no comparison
that was a very special truck

and no a truck will not win overall in the dakar again as the rules are now and the way the stages are built
unless the front the of car field completely falls apart do to mechanicals or acts of god/nature

F***ing Robby Gordon: The King of Sand

""F***ing Robby Gordon."

"You hear this a lot. You hear young Hispanic dudes say it with a respectful smile. Older, been-there-done-that California white guys who just want some peace and quiet say it. So do (I must confess) journalists who sit around for hours waiting for him to arrive or depart. You hear it from other racers, publicists, race officials—basically the entirety of the demographic that ever has any reason to speak his name. Tonight, it's a cute 25-year-old chick clutching a beer still frothing from a ride over the dunes. The moon is bright and casting dark shadows over the sand. It's two in the morning, and it's getting cold."

Just to be clear, was it the beer or the cute young woman that was frothing? There are two very distinct visual images that come to mind from that sentence.

I have to admit, can't wait to see what RG brings to the game this year, both from the machine and a lack of critical mistakes while on course. I like the guy.

What the hell - are those individual / cam / rocker / valve covers per cylinder??????????????????????????????????????

I think that 'shadowing' video was from the era when I'd see doubled up. supercharged engines, mounted diagonally, in the "cargo" area of the trucks. The things were absolutely ballistic. I've no real idea of rules regarding the trucks, but I think things got quite "berzerko" regarding them. Rules introduced to bring them back into the relms of sanity, even moreso than the backing off from multicylinder bikes?????? Well do I remember JCO's four cylinder Yamaha.......

What are the new engines? Have they been restricted?

Way back when, when I ran a couple WRC, rules listed a class of 19,000 cc. That was probably the two engine DAF class.

There has been 20 years of technology and these race trucks just keep accumulating at the front.

As a rallier I won a series with a less than top car. Always finishing and always in the top ten, usually about 4-5th.
The trucks are like that. Not always the fastest, but not slow, either.

It depends a lot on the course. Supposedly more WRC type miles, this year. If that means tighter curvy roads, the trucks will suffer. If more sandy savanah type roads, the trucks might do well.

A couple teams have new smaller trucks. Maybe for better handling.
Robby's new rig should be a better handling vehicle.

I guess we'll see in a few days.

They certainly aren't slow either ,in 2010 Dakar the Kamaz of Kabirov was the fastest overall on the 5th stage (if my memory is correct ),faster than Cyril and Marc coma even
.
