How much more than a "skin deep" resemblance is a WTCC car, a WRC car, a Super V8 Tourer or for that matter a NASCAR? I for one would like to see the premier category at Dakar go "open formula", and if they do and Puegeot (for example) turn up next year with a T1 2WD (same category as RG's Gordini) it sure as hell ain't gonna look like the girlfriend shopping car! Identifiable as a production version...? Don't think so?!
You make good points, but I did say "sort of". At least the street version of a NASCAR, WTCC, WRC, or V8 Super could negotiate, at a much slower pace, the race courses the racing versions run on. And the street Tourareg and Pajero could also follow the actual path of the Dakar, but an real AWD mini wouldn't get 20 miles.

It's funny - I saw a vid up on Rubbies site, with him talking about the 12, or 11th stage. With his usual, "the 1.5 hours we lost when the car stalled / wouldn't start, would have had us in .... without it" routine.

But, wonder of wonders, a bit of humility / reality came from him. He said, roughly, this is not verbatim; that he went out on the course and, "some people" underestimate how fast the Minis go" . Well, yes, they do. That fast, that they win.

So, they are not a std Mini - far from it. Just as others have noted, in "major" class racing, cars are little more than 'silhouettes'. Always been the way, will always be the way, unless the class your racing in has rules otherwise.

"Stoopid Fast" - well, the other, fast - well, faster blokes, are FAST - faster than Rubbie. I see plenty of eye opening speed from all the vehicles - that they are not "pogoing" all over the place, perhaps 'makes' them look slow. Smoother, is inevitably, faster.

A Mini Clubman lives across the street from me, before that, the latest Cooper Special. The "New Minis", have not been small cars, by any stretch of imagination. Well, I guess they are to Yanks. They are so far removed from the "mini", Minis. They're about double the size. The Clubman, is only about 2ft shorter than my long wheelbase van, and a std new(er) Mini, parked further down the road is the same length of the Holden Commode parked next to it. The "lowered roof" effect, is all that is small about the bloody thing.

So, let's see what Rubby does next year - see if he works out how to build something that doesn't 'vapor lock' itself to a standstill, and handles well, and not just make a serious amount of noise - both the car, and himself.

He's got plenty of experience, and plenty of money - he's no 'starving privater".

I hope he does well, next time.

As it turns out Karginov has been caught doing maintenance on his truck 4 km outside bivouac (link is Dutch), but the official that caught him didn't have the necessary classifications to report it. By the time the Dakar Event Official came to the scene, the hood had already been shut. Because of this, Karginov narrowly escapes a 6 hour penalty.

Time for some karma for Kamaz today.

I am pissed that the car race was fixed by the Mini team. Peterhansel waited for Roma and Al-Attayah in the special stage because he was ordered to by the team manager. BULLSHIT~!!! I feel cheated. Peterhansel should have won regardless of the team he was racing for. It all seems fixed now and politics has intruded too far.

""""Stéphane Peterhansel has stopped at km 133 to wait for the other drivers on the provisional podium, future winner Nani Roma and future third-placed driver Nasser Al-Attiyah. The three Minis will cross the finish line together in this order. The three cars got underway again mirroring the general classification.""""

If they're all on the same team, why do they care who wins?

Exactly... except this year WOULD have been the big 12 for Peterhansel... and he was legitimately winning before the politics got involved. I honestly think that there should be a rule disallowing this sort of team interference. Just like the bikes being dominated by KTM a few years ago, now the cars are dominated by Mini... so maybe something should be done.

In my opinion, this race should be about the pilot, navigator, and mechanics... not about corporations controlling their pawns.

Makes no sense. Mini would get tons of exposure out of Peterhansels 12th win.

I wonder if Peterhansel still gets a win bonus?
