Two Wheels Into the Sun--Rte 2 All the Way

2 old guys on 2 old motorcycles following US Hwy 2, the old "northern route" along the Canadian border, before the snow falls. That's what it's about. And then one of the guys falls off behind Mount St. Helen and the other guy decides to the take the looong way home-- the Pacific Coast Highway, Death Valley, Rte 66, whatever iconic road he can discover.

I had just gotten back from what was supposed to be a 4-week ride on my KLR to Mexico's Copper Canyon, Uriche and Batopilas,-- that had turned into a 3-month ride around Guatemala-- when my brother-in-law, Jimmy, asked if I would help him buy an old BMW and ride out west the following summer. He started scanning Craigslist and the IBMWR forum right away and soon announced he was planning a 3-hour drive to look over a R100RT. "What should I look for?" he asked. I suggested ask for maintenance rocords, check out the guys garage for signs of mechanical aptitude, and see if he is type who takes care of his lawn mower, chain saw and other tools. A few days later, he called me back.

"The guy's got a Ducati and an E-type Jag in his garage, the floor's spotless, and all the oil cans on the shelf have the labels facing in the same direction. The bike looks new, has been serviced and has factory luggage."

Well, Jim bought the Beemer, took the MSF course, got his endorsement, and picked the machine up three weeks later. Summer nothing! A few weeks later, he rides from Newport-News, VA to my house in Michigan with a cooler, a grill and a beach chair roped to the back ready to go.

And here's how it went. Now for the apology: Try as I may, I can't get the knack of how to load images into the ride report, not consistently anyway. Shit, I'm old! So, if you want to follow the tale, I've linked to the blog entries I made.

Lets see, where was I.....

September 1st: It all has to start somewhere.

Let's see if it works this way.

Never posted a ride report before...I really should learn to do it right. Guess if you have an interest, you can click and read

Coming across the flat center of Washington State, Jimmy had said he was getting tired of riding. I never suspected he would stop quite so quickly, though. The forest roads behind Mt. St. Helen make for great motorcycling, but there's little margin for error, and the drop-offs send you down the embankment between the cedars and pines where nobody would find you for a year or two. Unless you had an angel watching out. We did.

And Then What Happened?

I decided Washington State held bad ju-ju for me and headed south out of Olympia leaving Angel Carol, her garage of old Beemers, and her menagerie of stuffed animals behind. A better friend one could not have found. My destination was Crater Lake, which I had never seen, and the home of an old friend where bedroom camping was on the agenda.
