Just for 4 days! We're using the GPS in a bit of an unconventional way, so the navigation isn't too easy and isn't too hard. I want to have the HP navigation and finding the waypoints to be as close to the way it's done in Dakar as possible. I figured out a way to do that using Garmin, but I don't have a way to do it on a Lowrance that keeps the playing field level. I wish we could, because the car guys are heavily oriented towards Lowrance. But the Garmins are fairly popular, so maybe those who don't have one can find a friend to borrow from. The alternative is to force everyone to rent the Dakar GPS and the special bracket for hundreds of dollars each for just one race, which we're trying to avoid.

Don't worry, you won't have to learn a bunch of crazy Garmin functions and menus. What we have setup is a super simple concept.

To all who know my ways, I was just laying out a new bit of the course and found just the right place to put down a waypoint that's now named "HogWild". You'll see it in the roadbook. Ha ha ha ha!!!

Garmin

Scott, no worries. For a couple hundred for a new Garmin or maybe find a good slightly used one on ebay or craigs is still WAY cheaper than the Dakar route. Renting the Dakar required GPS was one expense only, then you had to purchase all the special wiring and cables, the three special antennas, the special GPS mount/holder and the sentinal from the french organizers. All that was in the thousands, especially with the great american exchange rate.

All of us guys on the side of the pond are soooooo thankful for you and Scotty for stepping up and putting together these N. American rallies.

Hey anyone want to buy slightly used Dakar cables and antennas cheap? It's all in a box not being used so much????

If you need a GPS, West Marine has the Garmin 78sc on sale for half price, $224.99, TODAY (Wednesday) only! This is a very good GPS at a very good price, and it's perfect for Rally Diabolico and other events. Unlike the similar 62 model, the 78 line includes a 12V power input, so you can run it off your bike battery, which can save you from the jiggling batter power off problem many experience in off-road.

I found a cool place to put a waypoint!

This "Stingray" dune feature is nearly a mile wide and 300ft high.

Fortunately you won't have to climb all the way to the peak to "achieve" this roadbook point.

Wow. That's a monster. Beware, the crocodile hunter died from an interaction with a Stingray after surviving many bouts with crocs. .

We'll have fat crocs too. The tail of this one is 700 meters long, with a slither of amazon size snakes right behind!

That deal was only good for one day. Now instead of $225, it's up to $350. But there's another good deal on the basic 78, which will also be a great unit for Diabolico (I have 4 of them). The 78 is $200 at Academy Sports:
