990 stalls when changing into first gear???

My 2008 990 Adv has been stalling recently when I change from neutral to 1st gear. Hit the starter and nothing. Change into netural and starts right up but stalls again when I put it into 1st. Hit the kill switch on and off and try and start in first gear and sometimes it starts right up and then works fine. Though I have noticed a bit of clutch drag intially but maybe because oil pressure is still building up? A few months back I installed BDCW sidestand relocator and glued a rare earth magnet to the sidestand switch. So thought it was the clutch switch so I closed the switch circuit by soldering the wires together at the plug behind the dash. Maybe the magnet isn't working anymore from the heat of the engine? Any ideas?

Edit: it doesn't have the alarm

By disabling the clutch swtich wouldn't that also disable the sidestand switch?

When I try and start it in gear with clutch lever pulled in it doesn't even try and crank over. So I'm thinking it's not clutch drag that's causing the issue

I know there are a heap of threads out there on stalling issues but I've searched through them with no luck.

I don't have the answer to whether shorting across the clutch switch fools the sidestand switch. But I know the magnet has to be in just the right spot on the sidestand switch. You might want to recheck. I believe I would reconnect the clutch switch, verify the sidestand magnet placement and try again.

not familiar with your ride but I agree it does sound like a side stand down scenario
on honda even though you would think the clutch and side stand circuits
could be bypassed by shorting one together mine uses a couple of diodes

and even with the clutch pulled in mine will die if you hit 1st gear with the stand down

in other words I would be checking your side stand mod

Ok, thank you. I just glued the magnet straight onto the hall effect sensor without much thought on placement.


I just found the below. The last bit sound like if you leave sidestand switch connected it's not disabled by the shorting of the clutch switch

I think it's the slave cyl. I tried disconnecting the side stand switch and it wouldn't run in first at all. Plugged it back in, started in neutral all good, change to first stall. Managed to start it in first but clutch drag was even worse. Gear changing was notchy on the way home. Ordered Oberon slave cylinder and hope that fixes it

Well guess what?

On my 950/990 bastard, I'm ready to do the maiden voyage and the damn thing dies/is killed when shifting into gear. It's not a clutch thing it''s a kill switch thing. I disconnected the gear indicator and it won't do anything when you do that.

I've googled, read manual etc.

Has anyone BTDT on this?

Jumping the clutch won't work.

I have the clutch lever pulled in when I clunk it into gear and it still dies.

The side stand switch has already been cut and eliminated, I can't find it.

It must be something on this engine. (2010 990 SMR)

Why is it doing this does anyone know?

Revisit your kick stand switch elimination. Neutral light lit and kickstand down = running engine
Neutral light dark and kickstand down = dead engine

I have had bikes skip when the kickstand bounced in the woops. Clutch switch isn't part of the circuit.

It was running with the other engine. It has to be coming from the gear indicator.

Ive read about a jump that eliminates the clutch interlock but even when I pull in the clutch it won't run. So that wouldn't help.

The 990 SMT? SMR? have "anti-wheelie" in the first couple gears if I remember correctly. So I guess the sensor reads more than just neutral.
