Best news ever! Now, I am wondering if being on the east coast would be sooner or later? Bro-in-law got his new 690e (2014) last Saturday...was one of the first I reckon...I have my deposit down at same dealer..Eurosport Asheville. Haven't heard one word from them since paying my $ down. I had my mind set on the black..but not seeing anything but pics & videos idk...the orange is fine and dandy too. I want whatever comes in off the boat first! I've bought my fair share of new bikes....this one has me all tore up...thanks Velociraptor ...I need medicine to sleep...or whiskey.

I almost hope (for my sake only) that it isn't THAT early.

Anyone interested in a 2008 950SE ?

Yes, earlier than I was expecting, but my 690 is already sold so no problem for me. I am wondering if a KTM van might be coming for the show and brought along some bikes for this area. Just a guess. They had a big KTM van here for the 1190 Demo Day last fall when it dumped rain all day and the demo rides got cancelled, but they had a lot of bikes in that van.

for those who have ridden 1290 unlimited on the track:

did you get false neutral shifting near redline?

I dont know if the 1290 got a solid steel shift star or the cast one that RC8 got

false neutral at high rpms and oil pressure cam tensioners can turn your engine into a bucket of shrapnel

I have ridden two on track, one was being broken in so kept it under 7k rpm, the other was already broken in so was on it to redline and never got a flase neutral on either.

1290 The number of the beast

G'day

This is quite the amazing bike when you listen to the reviewer, sure its fast
but its not so bad that you couldnt handle it.

I think that if I was into the naked style my choice would be between the 1290 and the S1000r BMW.

KTM have done some fine work on this bike and im sure the new owners will have some amazing things to share with here on Adv.

Enjoy the video..

Went to the MC Show and finally got to see the 1290 in person and sit on it and have a good look. Also was able to talk to the national distributor. No bike for me this coming week. No shock as that seemed too good to be true. Looks like March. Bikes are in the country somewhere on the east coast, and will be shipped out soon. The bike felt very nice to sit on. There is what appears to be a non-adjustable steering damper under the steering stem. I like the gas tank as it has nice design to tuck the knees into during a track day and also the front of the tank slopes down to better allow you to tuck down at high speed. I sat on the newest model Ducati Supermotard and it seemed a little cramped. And yeah, the left side of the new Monster 1200 looked very unfinished. It was on a pedestal so not able to sit on it. Anyway, I really liked the 1290 and will happily spend the bucks for it.

Yes, but will you happily spend the bucks on one for me? That is the question...Love it, but I just don't think I'm spending that much on a bike when there's other stuff out there for way less that will do just about as much for me in the real world. It'd be way cool, though. I still love cool (Just not that much any more.). Keep us posted.

Yeah, everyone is at different stages of riding motorcycles and has different preferences for bikes. In terms of street bikes I have had:

BMW R90/6, Suzuki Hayabusa, Honda RC51, Suzuki GSXR-1000, Suzuki DL1000 V-Strom, KTM 990 SMR. The two I liked the best were the RC-51 and the SMR, both of which had nice v-twin motors that sounded great. So the idea of a big torquey v-twin in a fairly light package is very appealing to me. What really got me interested in the 1290 was when the specs came out and the listed dry weight was slightly less than the 990 SMR. Amazing. Ducati makes some great v-twins too but they never have made a bike that fit what I wanted enough to make me buy one. I rode a Diavel and loved the engine, but I was too tall for the bike and dragged some hard parts in turns too easily. By the time the Ducati sport bikes finally got faster than my RC51, I was moving past the sport bike phase. I bought the 990 SMR because at the time the Ducati Hypermotard was more expensive and made less power. I sat on the new Ducati Hyper and it was too cramped, whereas the 1290 fit me very well.

So each of us has gone through a certain number of bikes and had some favorites or wants something different and we end up at a certain bike. Right now that bike for me is the 1290, which will look real nice parked along my 500 EXC!

Your first statement is key and true. I've had a bunch and am in the process of moving to smaller bikes. If I hadn't already lived out the cool stuff (Many times over), I'd have to do it. Alas, I'm free to relax and ease up...money and risk. Retirement is just a couple years away.

Enjoy. The SD is a beaut...and I may still have one, yet. But I hope not.

Here's a great video test of the 1290R's electronic flip over protection. Wait, it doesn't have that?

The story was that the bike was handed off with all the rider aids off. Crasher broke his wrist. Poor bike!
