Bullet Proofing 2007 990 Adventure

Hi Guys,

A couple of mates and I are looking at sending our 2007 990 Adventures over to America and then travelling up into Canada and then on to Alaska.

Looking for tips on preparing our bikes so they are all set up and don't cause any issues along the way.

Looking at travelling in summer (American) 2015

Any tips would be much appreciated!

Theres a lot of info here in OC (if you know what to search for) and some of it condensed here : http://ktm950.info/

Things you need to look into:
Water pump seal
Fuel pump filters
Clutch slave

Protection you might want to add:
Proper sump guard
Proper hand guards
crash bars (hepco becker IMO - std ktm ones are poor)

If you want to spend more money, look at getting narrower/stronger rims if you're doing a lot of off-road...

Fuel. Tyres. Ride.

I would also add a sidestand relocation or reinforcement kit of some sort to that list, just as a precaution.

+1 Do this if nothing else. Spares can be found easily enough. Replacing your cases is expensive and time consuming. I think most are guessing at least a little off road.

You didn't mention what type of terrain you were looking to ride. What are your plans? Mostly roads or are you venturing off road? If you stay away from the dirt you risk missing some great areas.

check your shock mount bolts.
Good bash plate, rock hard rallye gear.
Modify your stater relay . when this goes it will disable the bike with an intermittent electrical problem which is hard to find if your an electrical dummy like me. , search thread for this one.

Thanks for the ideas everyone.

We are looking at doing Trans America Trail but then prob taking it reasonably easy through Canada and Alaska (50/50).

We hear that there is ways around the really tough parts of the trail if required.

All great info, Have already got bash plate and crash bars on the bike (S W Motec), Bark Busters and a side stand bypass.

Looking at setting up my front suspension soon and need to get a new rim, any suggestions?

save weight and increase cranking performance by installing LiFePO4 battery. for adventure duties in cold temps like you are headed for ... install the largest LiFePO4 battery that will fit into space on 990Adv. EarthX ETX36 (14AH actual)

You need a bracket that mounts the sidestand on the frame, not the engine case.

If you want to take a less travelled trail try the TCAT (Trans Canadian Adventure Trail) 16000km, 97% or 98% none tarmac. It's created by members of Advrider.

Can you explain how or what you are doing to the started relay? I looked around and found a reference to using a fuse holder but wasn't sure how it is being implemented.
