Happy New Year

Happy New Year

New Year's Day has dawned bright, clear and cold in Shediac...-22C this morning. The good news is it looks like the snow storm that is coming to New England is going to slide south of us on Thursday/Friday and Saturday will be clear for a drive to Portland to catch my flight and get back on the road.

All the best in the New Year!

Ride safe!

It's Cold!

After a quiet New Years Eve

We actually stayed up until midnight and had raspberry sparkling wine

I think even Bob the cat was tired after the Holidays

We took a little New Years day drive and took some pictures of all the snow to show people in Mexico

If you've visited Shediac on your bike I'll bet the Point de Chene Wharf didn't look like this!

I plow this driveway at the B&B across the street, as well as my own, you can see the snowbanks are as high as the roof of my neighbor's garage.

I took these shots from Angele's Mom and Dad's, 2nd floor apartment in our building, you can't see the street anymore for the snowbanks

I plow the driveway at the green house too, as well as our own, so the Kubota has earned it's keep this Winter

And of course I do the driveway at the apartment building

We went to visit Angele's Uncle, Joey who has a beautiful house on a river near here. His living room has a great view of the river.

There were guys out there ice fishing on New Years Day

This morning we got into serious cold

Here is the display on my Davis instrument weather station this morning.

and the thermometer on my deck

Looking forward to Mexico!

More later...

Wow, so much snow and so cold. At least we now get to see what the Wharf looks like but next time, without snow

I hope someone can drive your Kubota while you are away

Lots of snow and lots of cold. I am not a fan of Winter, I have seen more Winter than anyone needs to see in a lifetime.

Angele's father, Ron, can operate the tractor, he's going to take over.

Wrong date

Just noticed my Davis Instrument was showing the wrong date. It was a day behind the times. I wonder how long its been like that. Fixed!

Plates

Yesterday I went to work making a display of all the licence plates Angele gave me at Christmas. I put them on a wall over our front door around a map of my route to Argentina on last years trip. The map has been signed by all who attended my welcome home party last Spring. It all makes a great souvenir

And speaking of plates, we took our friend Tammy to a birthday lunch. Here is some food porn from the Coast Restaurant in Shediac

Lobster Mac and Cheese

and Hot Chicken with hand cut fries

Here is Tammy, her birthday was a couple weeks ago but it snowed and we couldn't get together, so better late than never. Happy Birthday Tammy

and a nice picture of Miss Angele

Packing today, Departure day for Maine tomorrow! We're sitting here watching a blizzard roar through today.

More later

Cold? You got nothin to complain about, try -42 with a windchill of -50 in Timmins, Ontario on the 2nd of January. My bike would just not turn over. Maybe I needed a lighter grade oil?

Everything is relative I guess. I remember the guys at Air Canada in Moncton talking about a guy from Iqaluit coming to work on the ramp here. Never did his coat up all winter, and when the temperature hit 15C or 60F in the Spring, he moved back home because he couldn't take the heat.

Snow blowing

I just came in from snowblowing the bit that today's blizzard dropped. We were lucky, most of the snow went to Nova Scotia this time. Plenty cold enough for me snow blowing in -30 windchill. That's an Air Canada, arctic parka I'm wearing, wonderful warm but it's the eyes, hands and feet that are hard to keep warm. Bring on the sunny south.

Enjoying your ride report and will follow on with the adventure.

Sea Foam has a good reputation when working with carbed bikes cleaning small passages etc and I also use it in my fuel injected bikes as a winter additive for storage and then as a shot every once and awhile as an injector cleaner. What it is made up of has been posted before, not rocket science but it seems to work.

I'll follow you on the rest of this ride and all the best in the New Year.

Hello from Texas

I made it to Texas. Considering the weather the Eastern Seaboard has been having i was very lucky.

Angele and I had a good drive on Saturday to Portland, Maine

We saw some fantastic scenery caused by the recent ice storms. Around Augusta Maine it was like a drive through a crystal forest.

We got to Portland, Angele and I stayed downtown and visited with our friends Ian and Johanna

Sunday, Angele took me to the Portland Jetport and drove away. Tough to say good-bye for about three months.

As soon as the aircraft pushed back from the gate the Captain said we were going to be delayed due to a ground stop in Philadelphia due to freezing rain...Not good! A ground stop means if you are headed to Philly you must wait on the ground where you are until Philly ATC says it is OK to head their way.

Finally we took off and had a nice flight. I took this shot as we passed over Boston and Logan airport.

The ground stop delay caused me to miss my connection in Philly

I stood in this kilometer long line for customer service at the Philly airport

I was trying to get on the 2pm flight to Houston and waited with the thousands of other travellers who had missed connection when I heard my name over the PA but i couldn't hear the rest of the message.....so I asked someone to hold my place in line, ran over to the gate where the Houston flight was boarding and they (US Air) had moved me to that flight and had a ticket waiting for me I was really really lucky, some people are stranded in NY and Philly according to CBS News tonight for over a week!

My friend Bud picked me up at the Houston airport about three hours later than originally planned.....lucky! I had called him from a payphone in Philly and caught him in time to warn him about my missed connection. Lucky. I have two cell phones. One I had left in my bike jacket in Texas, not sure what I was thinking when I left it here back in November. It is a Tracfone and it doesn't work in Canada so i guess I just had going home on my mind, it never occurred to me I might need it on my way back. I also have a Canadian IPhone which is about 6 months old and the battery died in it just a couple weeks ago. I had to send it away for service. UPS was going to deliver the repaired phone last Friday but the blizzard prevented that.....so no phone, a long lineup growing exponentially...and i didn't want to leave the line to phone Bud, I tried to borrow a phone but everyone was on hold for US Air Customer service, many had had their phone batteries die as they waited on hold...Not good but it all worked out. I am here, enjoying Bud and Virginia's wonderful hospitality.

I saw these guys hanging around the neighborhood this morning

Bud and I went to the Hilltop for lunch after a productive morning repacking the bike. It was too cold to ride today, it was 25F

We had one of the Hilltops great burgers, cooked and served by Terrie, who is a great waitress and a friend of Buds

and i even tried a Cajun dish called Boudan (sp)

Yum!

A good friend of Buds, Russell, who I met on my last visit passed away unexpectedly on Saturday. The funeral is Wednesday, Bud of course will attend and likely he and I will meet up in Port A later in the week. It is supposed to warm up by Wednesday. We'll spend a couple days in Port A then head for the Texas Hill Country to ride the Three Sisters before setting out for Big Bend, Texas Hwy 90 (a great road) and eventually,Yuma AZ

more later....
