Just got a TE510 yesterday, and started the application process for the Sandblast today. I'v been wanting to do this since I first read about it in 07. Any pointers for newbies? I cant wait!

Relax....Enjoy.....It's not as hard as you think now matter what that is.

You will learn most you need to know to get you started +in the class you will take as a new rider.

Everyone will help you. Get to know the riders near your number. If you need to, just follow the guy ahead of you on transits I bet they wont mind.

Get a cheep Moose roll chart and don't over load it. I reload mine three times during the event. I cut out the race stage parts. You don't have time to read them anyway.

Welcome, you are going to have Blast.

From a former class and series winner.

Thanks for the link, I had read a FAQs from a few years ago and was wondering if it had been updated.
A couple of other questions;
- Is a steering damper recommended, I have very little experience in the sand, and no experience on this bike (09 TE510)?
- Any favorite tires for these sandy roads?
- Is it difficult to do this solo if I don't have someone to drive a support vehicle?

Thanks,

It is doable solo, many have in the past. It requires a little extra planing or riding. A couple of options: 1. Give gas can and necessities to someone who can transport to Patrick service for you. 2. Drop service vehicle off at service area and then ride to the start. The finish is in Cheraw and your service vehicle will be in Patrick. You can ride back to retrieve or find someone to drive it to town.

Everyone has a personal preference for tires. I wouldn't sweat it to much, run what you have unless you need new tires. Traction is key but so is stability. A few soft terrain fronts wander at high speeds. You'll find a lot of people like the Michelin S12. I've used the S12 as well as the Pirelli MXExtra rear with MXMS front. I've also used paddle type mx tires. They work as long as the ground is thawed. The March date makes this less of an issue. I would not recommend a rally type desert tire.

Steering stabilizer is also personal preference. Some bikes benefit more than others. I have one on one bike and not on others. I don't really think it's necessary for this terrain. Play with bike set up to make more stable for the high speeds. Sacrifice quick steering for stability.

Working on getting approval for location, hopefully near McBee. Once sorted I'll have more details. Looking to make it an all day affair. May start early, finishing with enough time to make early registration or a later start time for those traveling in and running till dusk. Not sure yet. Really depends on securing training area.

Thanks,
I like my damper for sand riding. Honestly I think it is more mental but it gives me more confidence to loosen my grip on the bars, let the bike wander under me a bit and just relax. But as Conger said, mostly a matter of preference so if you are used to riding without it I wouldn't make speding the $$ on it a high priority.

Several of us do the RM races solo. Sandblast is a little more difficult than the others to do solo since the start, service and finish are all in 3 different towns. Last year I drove my van to service, unloaded the bike and rode to the start then after the race hitched a ride from the finish back to service to pick up my van. Teamed up with one other guy and carried his fuel and some gear in my van and he gave me the ride back to service.

So, I guess you could say nobody _really_ does this solo. We are all one big team.... until it gets to the racing itself

Volunteered to drive this:

but Duane said no.

Volunteering at a turn during the night stages reminded me of an alien abduction movie. You see the lights, but you don't really hear the cars until they're right on you:

I'm really worried about the time keeping and navigation though.
