Wilderness First Aid Training...any interest?

Edit 8/30/14: First class is two weeks out! Anyone who is interested should head over to advmedicaltraining.com and get registered. Enjoy your holiday weekend!

Edit 7/17/14: Quick update: This is happening! I'm offering Wilderness First Aid training geared towards adv folks, riders, desert racers...basically anyone who plays, works or travels in the outdoors with engine/motor driven vehicles. We teach National Outdoor Leadership School Wilderness Medicine Institute curriculum (real first aid, not nuts and berry stuff) with a twist.

I'm offering a standard $25 discount to any adv member who wants to take a course. Just pm me and I'll send you a discount code. FYI, I need about 10 folks to break even. Class size is 15 max and I've got 1 confirmed person so far. Sign up or spread the news!

The website is up and running and has all the info. Plus a way to register and pay is all right there. Check it out:

Hey guys,

Long story short, I'm thinking of offering some wilderness first aid classes, geared towards dual sport/dirt/adv riders, in the Southern California area to start with.

They would be Sat. and Sun. and most likely have the option to show up Friday night. It would be a 16 hour certification through the Wilderness Medicine Institute and I'm looking for a place where we can camp, have some shelter, a nice outdoor classroom for scenarios, and some decent riding nearby for post class hours. The new group campsites at Hungry Valley come to mind as I'm pretty new to the area and thats the only spot I know, however, I'm open to suggestions.

Classes are a mix of lecture, demo and hands on practice. This would be real first aid training with the focus on thorough patient assessments and making sound evacuation decisions while learning about a variety of trauma, environmental and medical issues that may arise in the backcountry. You also get to learn some cool skills like how to reduce a shoulder dislocation, splint bones, wound care and other fun stuff.

I would need about 10 folks per class to make it worth my while, and I could offer classes monthly and/or in other locations if there was enough interest.

So what do y'all think?

Count me in I'm interested. I'm taking first aid and cpr with wife through daughters girl scout troop.

Would it involve any low angle high angle rope basics, like harness, ropes, tools, knots etc...

I'd be interested. I've seen similar courses where the cost is upwards of $200/person.

What do you think your course will run?

I just paid the Red Cross $90 for 1 day CPR and first aid. $200 for 2 days doesn't seem out of line to me

@ Bluedog: Not going to include any technical rescue skills right now. It's not a part of the standard curriculum, but we can always talk about it during breaks and mealtimes.

@dyvking: Cost is yet to be determined. Most of these courses are priced $220-$260 with outliers on either end and so I think it will end up somewhere around there. I'd like to see if I could include camping in the price and possibly a meal Friday night. Also, I'm going to discount the first course so I can fill it and see how it goes. And lastly, I'd like to offer an inmate discount.

@SHIFTY: that's a great course, the wilderness first responder (WFR). Really in depth and covers a very broad range of topics. I also teach those, but it's harder for me to get that chunk of time off.

And everybody else, thanks the replies and initial interest. I'm in the process of building a website and tracking down a location (which means RIDING...) all while doing the regular job thing too. Feel free to keep the questions coming and I'll keep this post updated. Ride safe

Wow. That's one heck of a training. That will make you a very valuable outdoorsman.

I can only do weekends.

Thanks Bob.

2 years ago, Feb. 25th. I got-off and tore my rotator cuff into and dislocated my right shoulder, (had to have a Cadavor to fix my cuff, thank you very much Mr. Cadavor) Also broke my right tibia and fibula at the same time

It was very intense pain! It would have been great to have someone or myself that knew what to do to help besides getting me to the hospital, (thank you Friends!)

I would be very interested. I already have my CPR Cert.

Thanks for posting this up, Eric.
